The only pre-release stuff I've ever seen is found at the back of the earliest European releases of the game. Carnby's model is different, he has a different face with pitch-black hair, whereas it's brown in the final game. His blue pants have been made greener too.
It might be the painted over face they did for marketing purposes back in 92 http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/alone-in-the-dark/
Great screens and video. Anything AitD catches my interest and I'm always looking for more related to the game. Classic.
The face on the box doesn't look painted over, it looks like a close-to-final model with black hair and mustache (and blue pants). Thanks for the links! edit: woah the video confirms they are indeed painted over!
Oh my, I have the very same original box here, but with german text on it. Just today, thanks to you, I realized his black hair on the box images... :O Time to look for the beta "Scream in the Dark" and the "Proof of concept demo" ^^ p.s. I stumbled across so many things already, like unpackers, editors, a modding-community, early demos...Ill post it here if I have everything sorted. explanation of the AITD files + unpacker and 3d room / model viewer : https://forum.magicball.net/showthread.php?s=6e1de2d7d01d9607ac13dcbeb943fab4&t=18152&page=2 modding people + hidden room : https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/alone_in_the_dark_1992_dos_76.html early demos by publisher "imotion" : https://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Alone_in_the_Dark.html wiki about old AITD stuff and how the game was supposed to be called : http://it.aloneinthedark.wikia.com/wiki/Alone_in_the_Dark a "pico 8" remake..wow...looks like Game Boy Advanced Version :'D https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=3804
Also inside of my box is a infogrames brochure, that has another scan of this black hair version : Regarding the "fake head"...it is indeed a fake head, painted by hand : (check video link by GioHAUS0n MAJOR93MOREAU) It says this demo plays a slideshow with the "fake head" when you stay idle in the begining of the credits : https://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/alone-in-the-dark/ And yes, at least 1 screenshot is there : And a close-up of a zombie : Also check the green carpet

I wrote the original re-implementation of the AitD engine that is used in those modding tools, so I'm pretty close to the subject ;-)

Well this seems to indicate a playable version with a different head exists. The head in the attic screen is definitely painted, but it's very different from the others, this is why I thought it was a real polygon "playable" head. It does look like a real modeled head, just compare with the attic head. I'm still not convinced the black head is painted, even if Raynal said so in the video.
Conspiracy ^^ But no, he says the fake head exists in the slideshow...I took the screenshot directly from the slideshow of the earliest demo. Why would he want to NOT say the truth about a "better" designed head ? Ya, attic head is indeed more similar to this...handpainted head. Still, handpainted. Sadly there are no earlier versions with a real-head, then the "Attract Mode" demo by i-motion.
thanks for all the info in this thread - AITD is one of my all-time favorite games! I played it on a 286 + Disney Sound Source , slow but amazing
I give you creds for that. I played it on a 386 SX/25 2MB system at the time and it was pretty choppy so a 286 must have been... well, painful.
