One of my favorite mini-genre of games are ports that are way, way better than they have any right to be. I was reminded of this after playing the recent Christian Whitehead port of Sonic 2 for iOS, a port that is just sterling. Full 16:9, gorgeous menus, and a virtual d-pad that is itself way better than a virtual d-pad has any right to be.

    iOS

Sonic 1, 2, and Sonic CD--perfect ports, all.

Every Cave shooter: Control so well that the difficulty of the games definitely goes down (which may or may not be a plus for you depending on how good you are at shoot-em-ups; me, I suck more than the Kacho does at them, so I appreciate the advantage I get over the bullet swarms)

    SNES

Street Fighter Alpha 2: This port is a wonder. I mean, there's very little reason to play it today what with virtually perfect 32-bit ports (and literally perfect CPS2 emulation), but it's worth giving it a look-see just to take in the technical feat of it.

    Genesis

Strider: This one is still a beauty. 8-MEGA MEMORY! The laugh from the villain you get when you power it on still gives me a charge.

What are your favorite way-better-than-they-should-be ports?
