I've always wondered this, and I guess some might think it's a stupid question:

In America there's people who play import games, watch anime, etc, basically are a fan of, and collect japanese stuff. Mostly hitting on the games part, of course everyone here knows that some American game players will play and import Japanese games and stuff, and I'm pretty sure other countries have people that do the same thing.

but in Japan, is there any Japanese people who collect or play American games? Basically, vice versa of what we do?

Very, very few. Lots of American Pop culture crap is mainstream in Japan, and always has been. Some western games actually do sell okay in Japan (GTA, Prince of Persia, etc.). The rest, is for a select group of very lost souls.

Do they just buy western made games or actually import western versions of games? Like western FF8 for example? You know, reverse of what we do?

Very few shops and only in big cities sell a few imports. Most are US games as far as CD media goes. Quite a few European games are available in cartridge format however. Still, the western game import scene is practically no existent.

There's a store in Akihabara that sells only imported game stuff... at pretty horrible prices. Surprisingly, on my last trip I had to buy something there and spent hours looking for it :p

A funny thing is to see on YAJ the pal or ntsc us version of some games like Comix Zone or Maximum carnage at the same price of the japanese version...

Besides,it seems that some foreign stuff is really popular in Japan like obviously the Nomad or the Probotector games (because they prefer the version with the mechas ^^).

When I play on XBOX Live (Halo 2) there's always a group of Japanese to link up with. I think for those interested in shooters they prefer American/European games. You also have "Asian" versions of games available that will play on Japanese consoles from Hong Kong at really good prices. Usually they get them from Yahoo Japan, I'm assuming. There's not much need to import from the US unless it's for something like GTA: San Andreas. Those sold pretty well. :)

    who doesnt ;)

anyways, i was surprised to find a great condition mystic quest (SNES) in trader2 for a mere JPY2000
must have looked at it twice everytime i walked into the store but never bought it (i would have never sat down to play it anyways).. but quite a fair price i think?

fund some other semi-rare games in PAL/NTSC versions aswell like duck tales 2 (NES) super turrican 2 (SNES) but i wouldnt say the import selection was overwhelming :p

My 2 cents; I have seen a US-version of Gunstar Heroes on YJP for a long time (about 3000 Yen), but no bids. Guess the japanese Treasure collectors arn´t interested in US/PAL-stuff (or maybe they buy it cheapier on Ebay...).

Nice to see you here Sven!

    Nice comeback... 3 months later.

3 years ago, fantastic. Now? Debatable. I still make appearances though, so it can't be that bad.

Yeah, considering I didn't see what you posted until yesterday. I don't lurk in the Japan section like a lot of other people do.

Whats with people liking something making them a very lost soul anyway?

Just because you own an Xbox doesn't make you any less of a wapanese. Its the whole "My favorite place on the whole planet is better than everything else!" mentality that makes you one. Everyone has a right to an opinion, but stating your own opinion as fact is highly arrogant and ignorant.

And before anyone says US games are nothing but "In your face" ,"Gangsta" crap, or nothing but Madden games, its nowhere near as bad as some of Japan's games are, imo. There are enough Mah-Jong games released in Japan to make Madden shit his pants in fucking horror. And most of them probably sell because of naked loli pics, too.

And to which I tell you as well to actually find out something about somebody before acting like a complete cock. I don't wank to every part of Japanese life. No, I don't like western games. I don't think they all suck, but for the most part, they do. Does that mean I like all Japanese games? Nope. I think most of them (especially new ones) are complete shite as well. RPGs, sports games, of course Mahjong, Horror games, music games -- they all bore me. I'm pretty well in touch w/ what I like. And, sometimes I shit on everything else.

And as for making fun of the west (or actually America) in general, what's wrong w/ humor? Sure, I poke fun at the obese, backwoods, lawsuit trigger-happy beast that is known as America today. [Notice I didn't throw in any Arkansas-based incest jokes.] But alas, I'm a fair man. I also make fun of Japan for all it's shortcomings. Crap TV, living in boxes, mind-numbingly long work days, the absolute lack of capacity to speak English properly after years of studying that 95% of the nation shares, skanky dressed gals, the abomination that is Japanese pop music, also the abomination that is game music, lining up for hours on end for donuts, and on, and on.

So, if you personally find offense at my posts, which you obviously do, (this is the third time you've said something somewhat out of line), I'd suggest you not read them. It's just the interweb. Relax.
