I noticed I have never seen an american box for the official vga adapter made by sega for dreamcast. Did sega ever release the official vga adapter in the U.S. and if so what does the box look like? Cause I know dreamcast games listed vga support on the back of cases. But I never saw an offical sega vga adapter in stores only 3rd party ones.
The VGA-box did get featured on the official US SEGA webshop. So I do think it got released, but probally in low quantities.
I never saw one..... I've alwasy seen the japanese version...but never the US version... THis thread is very interesting...THe only difference is the box, right? P.S Sorry for my BAD english....
Yeah. I do remember the sega us website carrying it as well but do not know if they were selling just japanese ones. Was it the same for europe?
Was there really a US version? I have never seen one despite looking through Dreamcast accessories on ebay.com for many years. A lot of PAL/European Dreamcast games state on the packaging that they are compatible with the Dreamcast VGA box, but it was never released in Europe to the best of my knowledge. It was mentioned in the official UK Dreamcast magazine that Sega planned to release the VGA box in the future, along with the Dreamcast Broadband Adaptor, but neither were released in Europe. I used to check on Sega Europe's 'Dreamshop' throughout must of the Dreamcast's short lifespan, and they were never advertised. What I do find odd is that Sega seems to have produced two versions of the Official Dreamcast VGA box, one is solid black in colour:- The other is transparent black:- I have actually seen pictures of both of them packaged in the official Sega Dreamcast VGA box packaging, so either Sega produced two slightly different versions/used different production factories, or some company made exact copies in a slightly different colour
That 2nd one might be a 3rd party cause i do remember one 3rd party making a vga adapter that had a box that looked almost exact same as official one. I just find it odd sega would list support for vga on american and euro packages but never release it themselves. Then again they did use ascii stick as their official as well as steering wheel.
I think you might be thinking of this one:- Its very similar to the official one, but it doesnt use the exact same case mold like the transparent black one shown in my previous post. I have previously seen close-up pictures of the transparent black one and it actually has the official Dreamcast logo along with the Sega VGA model number 'HKT-8100' on the base, although I never saw any close-up pictures of the PCB. I did have some pictures of it saved to my hard drive, but I cant find them right now :banghead: ...All things considered the transparent black one is probably a third party copy, but even if it is I still think its pretty interesting!
I'm pretty sure it was sold in the UK. I have no proof but I remember seeing the boxes in stores here.
were they just japanese ones? I know of a store that didn't specialize in imports here but they sold the Japanese VGA box.
I am 99.9% positive there was no official European Sega Dreamcast VGA box, although some import stores did sell the Japanese version. Some UK stores did sell Dreamcast VGA cables, such as the Blaze VGA box:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Blaze-DC-VGA-adaptor-Sega-Dreamcast-Boxed-/280470166770 Or there was also an Electronics Boutique VGA box, but never an official Sega one. I would be completely amazed if you can prove otherwise though ;-)
I too have never heard of one. My aunt was a HUGE Sega fan(to the point where she tried unsuccessfully to tell Hollywood Video she broke the Dreamcast so she could just pay the $200 and get it before everyone else), so she had almost everything Sega. But, I've never heard her mention one, nor have I seen it in her belongings. My guess is is that Sega released it in Japan because computers were a lot more common in Japan, as well as their obsession with quality(this is why the Laserdisc still had a market there until recently when they stopped making players), so it was more financially feasible over there. The US had a popular tech crowd as well, so they were probably thinking about it, but decided against it for whatever reason. Sega probably included the support in their games for it and just let the third parties to take over with accessories. It wouldn't surprise me, as Sega's done that before. Anyone here remember that the official Sega gun was going to be released here, but because of the Columbine shooting, they didn't. They instead licensed MadCatz to make a light gun for the Dreamcast and left the support in. Still, if there was an official US or UK one, I'd love to see it too.
They got it in Japan because gamers care about video quality. Here people put an xbox 360 on an rf adapter on a 720p tv from walmart.
i know someone who has a job at office depot and won't buy even a 720P television to use his Xbox360 on. sticks with his little rinky dink CRT.
I cared about quality, that's why I bought one at a software etc(now gamestop) after reading about it online shortly after the dc launch, of course it was a 3rd party one by a defunct company called madness. I still remember the first day bringing it home and hooking it up to my gateway monitor. God did it look amazing. I was like "dreamcast graphics actually look like this?" Looks great on an hd tv through vga as well.
what's a good brand DC-VGA box? I seen some that do S-Video output too, having an all in one box would cut down on clutter.
Back from the dead, but BINGO! I always wondered if anybody had this US version, and if it was rare... I guess it is! Check out 1:55 and 8:40 of the video. Found it used at the local import shop here in Hawaii; but now defunct right before Sega discontinued support for the Dreamcast. I guess the Sega Retro page on the VGA box needs to be rewritten. http://segaretro.org/Dreamcast_VGA_Box
