Hi, thought I'd share this here. Some new info about intended uses for the VMU. Thanks to Assembler member DeChief for the info and the video! http://www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/2016/09/segas-telecom-dream.html
In the intro on the article on Dreamcast junkyard you mention that there were many plans for the VMU. One of those was to connect it to an arcade cabinet. This is actually a very common and useful feature that I used back in the late 90s. Mostly it was Capcom who supported the idea with the likes of Power Stone and Marvel VS Capcom 2. You could use your home save data in the arcades and vice versa.
I didn't realise the VMUs could also be used on arcade machines, I mistakenly believed that the Gamecube was the first system to offer that kind of connectivity (specifically between F-Zero GX and AX). Good old Sega, always one step ahead. Back when I still used to use my Dreamcast to go online with (back in the late 90's and early 2000's) I managed to download an unofficial version of Tetris to one of my VMUs that you could play using it.
Do you have any photos of this in action? When I watched the tape for the first time I tried to find photos of Blast City cabinets with VMUs in them, but I couldn't find anything.
Hmm, I do t think so but it shouldn't be hard to find. Just Naomi VMU arcade https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=p...isch&q=Naomi+Arcade+vmu&imgrc=RWRuBydQOns3SM:
