Next one is on Sunday July 17th at 1 PM EST. It will be a Free Play, so it's just going to be more along the lines of shooting the shit in regards to VGs and other fun stuff. I have an idea that I have been bouncing around for a little bit now, and finally got the stuff to work. For those who have ever seen ESPN's "Around the Horn" program, you will understand what I am trying to do. (Here is a sample of the show here. Basically, it will be a round-table discussion about Video Games and current events involving video games (with a mix of other geeky stuff in between). There will be a group of four panelists, and I will go over topics for discussion. The panelists will voice their opinions for each topic, and I will award points depending on the number of good points each panelist makes during their time. I will also remove points based on going off topic or making asinine statements or just shouting blind fanboyism. Every couple topics there will be an elimination of the one with the lowest point total at the time. When it is down to two panelists, there will be a final showdown round. In this round, all points are eliminated, and it's best of three topics. I will be using Ventrilo as it has the global muting functionality required for this game to work (a mute is a minus a point when they go off on tangents) and will record it on my comp and convert it to an usable file format. So, what I'm asking here for you guys is as follows: Interested in becoming a panelist? As I will be using Ventrilo, and will be recording it over that, so anyone who is interested in participating will need to have it installed, and have a knowledge as to how to use it. Being that there may be some mature topics discussed, I would prefer any interested participant being 18 or older. Participants also should have a grasp as to how to speak well over a mic. Early on, I will not be so picky, but eventually if there are too many panelists, the regulars will tend to be the ones who can talk the best, and who work the best with the others (as in if you have seen the show, you see how it works. Those who try to take over the show and make it a soapbox for themselves, or who constantly berate others never last). I have a tentative name for it, but for those interested in becoming a part of this program (and maybe even becoming a regular on it), let me know. You know how you see those weekly internet shows? Here's a chance to showcase yourself. I'm aiming for the first recording to be around 6-7 PM Eastern Standard Time June 12th (so, tonight). There will be more recordings in the future as I want this to be more of a weekly/bi-weekly show. Wasn't able to find enough for tonight. I think you might need to post the topics you want to discuss so people can decide if they know enough to talk about them.
Well, topics will vary, but it will tend to focus more on video game current events, and it's not a quiz. It's a moderated discussion with points being given out to those who keep to the topic and make good points. Heres a sample topic I would ask: Nintendo at their E3 press conference unveiled their next console system, the Wii U. It is about the same size as a Wii and can use all their controllers, but the one that comes with has a separate screen on it, and it puts the size even the original XBox ones to shame. Thoughts? So, it's mostly "What do you think about this" type questions, and hopefully, people bring up good points during their responses. Also, doing a simple skim of Kotaku can usually set anyone up for what I would bring up. However, for the first one, it will generally stick to E3 discussions and new releases, and pretty much everyone will be in the same boat. For future ones, I'll try to post the topics in here in advance if they stick to one event (like E3 for this one)
Well, got the first one finally done! Editing the recording now and uploading it shortly. Overall, I think it went pretty well once we got enough people for this. It went a bit long perhaps, but for a first episode, it definitely has potential and gives me something to build upon. Just had a quick flick through to check the sound quality on all of the people talking, and as I suspected it's a bit lacking for some of the participants. Is it possible to have the actual discussion on skype or team speak or ventrilo, whatever you're using, but also have everyone record their own audio in high quality? Then they could upload it to you and you edit it together.
Yea, I definitely could work on the sound quality, but not everyone has the software experience I do, nor do they have the quality of the mics. One of them said they had to tape their mic back together for this one haha, and being that it is over Vent (as I do record it via the Ventrilo recording system first, then do some simple editing using audacity (to cut down times where people may have disconnected), some people have mics that pick up more than just their voice (like background noise, or other feedback). So, I figure it would be easier for the panelists (for the time being) to do pretty much all the work myself. If this does become more popular, and the panelists get more experienced with this sorta thing, that idea definitely sounds like a fantastic one to use. I'll definitely be working on some improvements in that regard though. I know one of them was rather quiet compared to the others, so I'll help him improve the sound on his end. I just think he needs to enable boost for his mic, but we shall see For the first one, I went with what worked initially, and now I have something to build upon. You can be damn sure I will be working on ways to improve this. Do you have any suggestion as to what they can do to record in high quality? Here is a tentative topic list for Sunday's recording. - LoZ: Ocarina of Time for the 3DS - The game itself, and perhaps discussion in regards to the 3DS. - LA Noire - Another new release. Mostly opinions on the game itself and the Rockstar. - Hackers - Seems to be a pretty hot topic, and there seems to be a new incident every week now. - User topics - If you have any topics you want to see covered, send me your questions. There may be more topics touched on, but they would be mostly opinion-based topics as usual. Just keep an eye on Kotaku later in the week, and if I find something, I'll add it to the list here.
