Not really sure how to word this, but does anyone else have an obsession with collecting games/systems older than them? I know I do. I was born in 1989 (in the middle of the NES era) and yet my Atari 2600 collection is my largest game collection. I look at all my games for systems that are 32-bit or newer and the number of games I own is under 30 (20 for many) for every system. Just recently I've really started to take interest in 16-bit console gaming. Just the other day a friend came over and we hooked up one of my Atari's with a supercharger and played the first 5 supercharger cassette games. Sure a one of them was just laughably terrible, but otherwise I enjoyed what I was playing. Escape from the Mindmaster has got to be one of my favorite 2600 games now. Afterward he laughed about how that was the longest he'd played any atari game, but in my head I wished I could have played more! Two weeks ago I got my Atari 600 XL and I spent probably a good four hours toying around with Atari BASIC seeing what I could do with the system. I even started doing music! =P Now am I just too simple, thus enjoying simple games like those on the Atari/Coleco/etc systems or is there anyone else on here like myself who enjoys the games of generations before yours?
Exactly. I was born in 1979 so I have a choice of what, Pong clones and Computer Space. I do have a thing for women that are older than me though, but that's just because I'm a dirty pervert.
Just like you Skaarg I was assembled in 1989 and my first console was the N64 (1st portable: GB Pocket). The vast majority of my games is for the Saturn, Mega Drive and Famicom - all consoles that I never owned when I was a child and just came across once I had started to collect games. I wouldn't say I am obsessed with the old stuff though, I just like to play it. I grew up with the old GameBoy games and always wanted that 4bit dot matrix to be a little more colorful, maybe that's why I love Famicom games so much. As for 16bit 2D and 90's arcade games / ports, no idea. Maybe it's just because I like simple but fun games ^^
I like many game systems that came out before my time. And I consider the NES one of them, because I wasn't into gaming during it's heyday.
I was born in 1986 and the first game system I played was an Atari 400/800 computer. And after that the NES then SNES. I'm not certain the time frame, but still the NES was older than me. I know I was playing the NES though while it was still going because of games I remember playing and the year they were released. I was playing NES in 1990 I believe. Either way I am not concerned I guess about too many games older than me. I consider the NES my early years, with the SNES and then N64 being my generation.
Same with Yakumo, not much video-game wise that is older than me. I do like the "retro" style when it comes to cars, home decor, appliances, etc.
I was born in 92 so I really didn't play games until 98-99 when I got my N64. My Super Nintendo collection is becoming one of my largest ones all from yard sales. Over 30 games now.
When I was born the only consoles were the 2600, Intellivison and coleco or maybe just the 2600. So not really and Pac Man is only a year older than me. So yeah not much older than me to be obsessed over.
Not so much here. I was born in '81, and I have little interest in anything pre-NES. I mean, I enjoy the games, but I don't collect any of it. All my favorite cars are older than me though. I'm a big fan of late 60s / early 70's Japanese and German cars.
I had older sisters but I picked up fast. I was definatly a gamer by the time I was 3. My third birthday all i wanted was Super Mario 3.
I'm an old man too, born in 1974, but I do like collecting retro stuff. Some stuff like the Atria 2600 brings back fun child hood memories
Do older women count?! My gf is actually 4 months younger than me (both born in 1985) but on past experiences ;-)
I totally agree, my wife is older than me and the only time I've gone out with a younger woman it all went very pear shaped. Maturity, wisdom and experience counts for a lot.
Born in 1985, my first system I played was intellivision. NES soon after. I wouldn't say I'm obsessed with collecting things older than I am. However I do certainly enjoy it. I used to collect upright arcade games which were all older than i am.
I was born in '87. I remember playing a lot of Blades of Steel and Metal Gear on the NES. And a ton of Sonic at our friends house. I'm not into anything before the NES.
My girlfriend is a couple of years older than me too, though I've found women tend to be pretty much the same
