Were the games you were playing original GD-ROM discs from each of the different regions (NTSC-U / NTSC-J / PAL, etc) or were they backups?
The model in forst page, is the kiosk unit. But, hollywood video, proposed rental dreamcast like tsutaya or trial set. I found it after months of research: some differences: - No modem - An aluminum reflective sticker underneath the console I had never seen before - Manufactured in 1999 May - And finally, writing "BR215"on the casing of the console. I don't try to use each area game, I'll do it.
It should be able to play all, but only, North American games. The original poster's DC not playing certain games was most likely because of a disc read error. Also, the manufacturing date mentioned earlier just means that SEGA was anticipating significant sales, so they started production well in advance of the actual release.
Just so everybody knows I checked the inside of the unit I have it is identical to the later model I have I didn't take any pictures of it cause it was almost the exact same thing except the fan was different and yes that model has lots of disc read errors mostly with scratched disc.
that may be but we would still like to see the inside please if possible its like opening a proto cart we know whats inside but for the sake of documentation people take pictures anyway lol
Update: I have just fixed my machine and found out its bios cannot read games that are powered by Windows CE, so this model may have prototype firmware and hardware it's just not very noticeable.
I bought a Dreamcast last year to bring back the nostalgia I had with the system when I first got one 12 years ago. That was a "Model 1" Dreamcast made in June 2000. Just last week, I bought another Dreamcast at a used-games store and found out its a "Model 0" TK Dreamcast manufactured in May 1999. I noticed it does have a different fan from my first Dreamcast in that it is noticably louder and also set flush against the exhaust vents whereas on the Model 1 Dreamcast, it is slightly below the vents. I haven't taken apart any of the Dreamcasts however, I noticed it just by looking at the vents. Also, unfortunately, the controller ports on this Model 0 Dreamcast don't work. I heard its a common problem with some small part frying out internally and is an easy fix for those inclined, which I probably am not. It boots up fine to the screen to set the date and time and none of my three Dreamcast controllers register any input. My Model 0 did come with a modem and no BR215 writing nor reflective sticker anywhere on the system. Maybe the used-games store made some changes to it before selling it. Finally, I noticed both models use different screws. The Model 1 uses standard Philips-style screws whereas the Model 0 uses some hexagonal, star shaped screws instead, which I don't yet have a screwdriver to loosen those.
