And they thought you'd never bother to read it

I'm playing Blue Submarine No.6 Time & Tide on the Dreamcast at the moment and noticed something quite funny today. Normally I play on the big TV via SVIDEO (NTSC Dreamcast's actually have a very nice S-Video image) but I decided to give it a whirl on the TFT just to see if it would look any better than it already is. To my surprise it didn't really look that much better BUT it was possible to read the text that's used in background images. You know, the sort of text that you wouldn't really bother to read or even need too. Anyway, just take a look at Sega's description of these sonars :D

    ACTIVE SONAR
    Active Sonar System
Do not allow underside of the disc
    to become dirty or scratched.
If the underside of the disc
    becomes soiled, wipe gently with
    a soft cloth.

:smt043 Sounds more like the warning from a CDR that from a sonar :smt043

    U.R. SONAR
    Virtual Reality Sonar System
    Imagination reality system
    Keep out of direct sunlight
    And away
    From heat-generating appliances
    Store in a cool.

:smt042 Starts off ok but suddenly changes in to some sort of warning for a CD again. :smt042

Here's what the menu screen looks like in full.

As you can see, the text for the sonars isn't really there for reading but thanks to the power of the VGA box you can now read it :p

    The game looks like this.

Do you know of any games with some strange text on them. EngRish doesn't count by the way :)

Yeah, and to make it even more confusing, the text goes too fast!

It almost seems like the developers needed to find some quick filler text for those dialog boxes, but the only thing they could find was a box of CD-R's. As such, they simply copied the warning language found on the box to avoid having to do text translation on their own.

In Halo, there are supposedly messages written in the menus. I remember "All your base are belong to us" is in there somewhere. I found out about this on some Halo fansite.

I remember that one Capcom fighting game in the Dreamcast used to have a speech on the menu, in portuguese, saying something like " A Cerveja dos momentos felizes " (Translating : The Happy moments beer)

PrOfUnD Darkness probably remember this better than myself, since he owns a DC.

Any Engrish is good enough in this situation, it's foreign and cool like that. Besides their audience would be really just reading the subtitle stuff anyways. -)

Anything with vga on dc is better, in blue stinger, you get writing and labels of all the cans and debris on the paths.

    Haha, that's hilarious.
Dynamite Headdy had a few signs in the backgrounds that made me laugh. A very humoristic game in general, japanese style ;)
