Didn't realize that the animation that would play when you would write a famicom disk on a famicom disk writer was put on an anniversary dvd, well someone uploaded it on youtube so enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BCveZPCyPc
I'd like to know what kind of hardware is in the Disk Writer... I've never, ever seen one loose for sale (I'm guessing dual Famicoms, one for the menu, other for the FDS writing.) A peek inside:
I don't know how I feel about that music. "Good" certainly isn't one of the many feelings I have, though.
Me too. But who knows if anyone ever stole or made "missing" one of these machines. I'd think Nintendo would have kept pretty good track of them. I doubt any would have been sold to anyone. Though maybe Nintendo still has them and we could still find out more about them sometime in the future.
Odd that that animation had the NES carts instead of the Famicon carts, maybe a hint at plans to bring the FDS out over here?
Didn't Adol have one? Or maybe just the housing, but I think he mentioned once he had a non-working unit, but this was a few years back.
It looks like those games are similar to the ones found on demo units of the time. http://famicomworld.com/system/other/famicombox/
One guy in Osaka or thereabouts found a blue Famicom "RAM" cart for use in the Disk Writer (as seen on the interior of the door) but of course it was unusable in a regular Famicom. Presumably the RAM cart contained at least 32K of RAM for temporary storage, and the yellow NES-shaped carts contained the disk system files in ROM, arranged who knows how. The Disk Writer attendant would have to choose one of the carts and insert it to the right of the disk drive for copying.
There's an rumor that Nintendo in the 90's collected each one of the Disk Writers and made them pieces of garbage, sadly...
Oh, and the internal components are not from the Disk Writer, they are from the Famicom Disk Fax machine. EDIT: Sorry by my mistake.
Sorry, not true. All these scans are from my page here, if you wanna check: http://www.chrismcovell.com/secret/sp_FDShardware.html#diskwriter The scans were from a 1986 issue of Famitsu, and the Disk Fax system was started up in 1987. Also, you'll note here that the Disk Fax had a black casing next to the Disk Writer's silver:
That's why i shouldn't trust YouTube videos... :/ Or maybe i've seen another photo of the Disk Fax, changing my mind to this topic...
Great find! Always thought it would be amazing to make a replica of one of these towers to put in a game room, maybe have shelf on the insides to store controllers or games. Wonder if anyone has a CAD model for one of these or the layout specs somewhere.
