It's a fact that lots of popular videogames (both japanese and western ones) get anime adaptions. And since anime and videogames are two of my favourite hobbies (after all, japanese videogames and anime shares lots of elements from each other) I decided to make a list with anime based on videogames. In this list they are not included visual novels (unless they are visual novel/adventure mix like Danganronpa) and eroge games like Da Capo, Utawarerumono and Clannad, multi-francises like //hack, virtual toy games like Digimon (for those who don't know, Digimon started as a virtual toy game like Tamagotchi aimed for boys) and trading card arcade games (like Monster Retsuden Oreca Battle). Mahjong video games series like Idol Janshi Suchie-Pai are ok. If there are any anime which are not included on the list, you spotted some errors or you have any recommendations in order to improve the list please reply in order to make the proper modifications. Keep in mind that not all anime have traditional 2D style (like Pokemon): some of them are 3D (like Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children), some of them use claymation (like Taiko no Tatsujin)...the visual style varies from anime to anime but most of them are 2D so don't worry. Speaking about Pokemon anime, since it's a long-running series I posted one tag only.

I've not seen a lot of video game to anime. But what I have seen has been excellent. The manga Street Fighter films are very well done. Not perfect but not far off.

Still a billion times better than anything Hollywood has managed in over 20 years of trying...

It's already on the list as Hi Scoool! Seha Girl. And it's a great comedy anime that even non Sega fans will love it. And obviously much better than Hyperdimension Neptunia. At least Sega Hard Girls is full of video games jokes and references instead of just turning video games consoles into cute girls (like in Neptunia's case).

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is one of the best anime adaptions of video games. On the other hand, the anime movie based on Street Fighter Alpha is a huge abomination and one of the worst anime I 've ever watched.

Booo...... Why doesn't anime that came from hentai games not included on the lis....... *gets shot*

To be serious though, a lot of hentai visual novels got a clean anime adaptation. As well as non clean hentai adaptations.... :p

How the hell did I forgot to add this anime. Added to the list now. Thanks. And with the opportunity I added this rule for the list:
Althought anime based on visual novels are not included, visual novel/adventure mixs like Danganronpa are accepted.

To answer you seriously (not that you expected that :p ) here are the reasons:
    1) Visual novels (both clean and adult ones) are a separate category on their own
    2) It's practically impossible to keep track of any anime released based on visual novels and eroge. Unless you have a big site/database a la AniDB but only for anime of that kind.
    3) Most of them suck. I know, the same goes for many anime based on video games but it's even worse for anime based on visual novels. Of course there are exceptions like Air, Clannad, Kanon (not the old, crappy anime adaption from Toei Animation but the later one from Kyoto Animation that also made the anime adaptions of Air and Clannad), e.f., Utawarerumono (which maybe I should include it on the list since it also has tactical rpg battles) and so on.

Speaking for Utawarerumono here is my question:
Should I also add anime like Utawarerumono which are based on visual novels with rpg battles (even if they don't have much of them)?

Um, no. Read the OP more carefully:

Dragon Ball Z is an anime series based on the Dragon Ball manga. The video games didn't come first.
