Anime/Foreign films - Sub or Dub?

I'm wonder if people like "subs" more because it's now cool to hate "dubs." Theres always a few annoying voices in any series, in either language. Now because of the highly feminine anime trend, I just stay away from the stuff...

 

I think its more that most peoples first experience of Anime is usually the dubbed versions (Evangelion on TV for example), and after getting "into" it check out the subbed versions, and notice it generally feels more complete.

Its kind of like emulation, some people prefer playing a game emulated on a PC, with big thumping speaker setups and ergonomic pads. While others prefer the feel of the old original control pads, and the grainy quality of badly tuned RF signals.

 

I wish we had Eva on TV... I think a local PBS station aired it once 3-4 years ago but that was one time.

I think "otaku" feel that they can more strongly identify with a language they can't understand

I don't understand the emulation analogy, is subbed anime the original console?

Some prefer to experience it in its original format (crappy RF signals and awkward pads), while others may prefer it (in my analogy emulated) as it may offer some improvements (the ergonomic pads, big thumping speakers etc etc)

 

I don't see how "dubs" are technically better, well sometimes they digitally filter the original cells like in Eva or Dragonball to make a more clean/grotesque animation. I like watching the original stuff, but I hardly think most people think of dubs/subs in terms of video/sound quality, around here the mindset is "I want to be 'cooler' than TV anime watchers, because as [show's name]'s number 1 fan, I can relate better to [show's author's name]'s genius."

About videogames I prefer to use software emulators on real hardware with RGB and good "leads" (like Monster cable) connected to a decent audio system, that leaves me with emulator quality on old hardware. How does that fall into dub/subs?

I think anything (anime, live action, whatever) is just flat out garbage.

I went and saw Appleseed in Roppongi when it came out, subtitled, and was probably the best professional subtitling I've ever seen (and mind you, as I used to fan-sub back in the day, I know what constitutes good subtitles).

The irony? It will most definitely be dubbed for US theatres, no? They said they're aiming for world recognition w/ this movie, and you don't do that w/ subtitles.

For clairification, I'm not one of the "subtitles make me hardcore!" crowd, it's just that some English dubs are flat out annoying as hell. Again, as I mentioned before, the trend of making the male protagonists sound like they are going through puberty regardless of age (Shinji et al. from NGE, Keitaro from Love Hina, at some points Kaneda and Tetsuo from Akira). That being said, I think some anime isn't bad dubbed. I really like Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli's work, for example, and the three films I've seen dubbed - My Neighbor Totoro, Sprited Away, and Princess Mononoke - I thought the voices weren't bad. Not steller by any means, but not bad. The same with Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Ghost In The Shell, and for the most part, Evangelion. Now I'm not saying that the voices are perfect, because in most dubbed anime that I've seen, the voice acting feels very hurried and lacking emotion. I sure as hell can't identify with a language I barely know, but the Japanese voice acting seems to have more emotion to it than most English dubs, and with good subtitles, I'm getting a slightly better overall experience than watching a mediocre dubbed flick. And some of it is force of habit - I watched the entire Love Hina series on fansubs, and when I finally did pick up one of the overpriced American DVDs, I was rather put off by the changes to the voices - one gal had a flaky southern US accent, the gal supposedly from India did this horrifying imitation of Kwik-e-Mart Apu from the Simpsons, and the main male character had - surprise, the whiny puberty voice. Of course I preferred the one I watched first over the dub. It's not out of some wanna-be-Japanese sense of fanboyism that I like subs, but mainly because I find the majority of English dubbed voices annoying as all hell and feel like a complete idiot while watching dubs.

the shame is i can´t find any of them on the net

but the videos i got is dubs but still it is like i like both dubs and subs.

(and the funny part is listening to the pokemon theme in danish it is always cracking me up with laughter )

how does the "you gotta catch them all" theme sounds in japanese ?
(i have heard many of the other languages but not japanese)

 

The Pocket Monsters theme song doesn't contain "Gotta catch 'em all" at all

I'm tired of the lovey feminine male protagonists that dominate all the recent anime. To me even Japanese seiyuu have whiney voices. Over the last decade, the annoying voices have become more refined, so much that many shows spill into eachother as far as crap voices.

I stick with Japanese dubbing, and if the voice work sucks, skip the series, 90%+ of anime is utter crap anyways.
