Hi, someone is offering me an Xbox debug kit, and I'm thinking of buying it. Problem is that although it is translucent green, it doesn't say "Debug Kit" on the front. The sticker on the bottom does say "Debug Kit" though. I know I can open it up and check the hardware, but before I go through all that, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is at all possible this is a genuine kit; after all, it could just be a modded translucent green retail kit.
Yes, although they are hard to come by, I have seen genuine debug kits missing the silkscreen "Debug Kit" on the front panel. As long as it's still sealed and has the proper stickers on the bottom, you should be fine.
Well, the box *has* been opened, the seller says the hardware has been validated at some earlier time. But that's not really a problem, I can open it myself and take a look. At least I know there are Debug Kits without the labeling, thanks guys!
If for any reason it has been opened (or it looks as if it has been tampered with) you should spot a few differences on the motherboard of the unit. First of all there is additional memory on the Debug (128Mb as opposed to 64Mb), there should also be a fairly large sticker with the motherboard details roughly under the actual numbers 7,5 & 2 on this following image. http://www.xbox-emulation.co.uk/News/dextroseXBOX8.jpg However, if the seller is local and you are able to touch the unit prior to purchase then why not just have the unit plugged in. You'll soon spot the difference in dashboard.
Thanks for the additional info. I also read the video chip should be labeled "MCPX X2" instead of "MCPX X3". The dashboard is not proof enough, as I have a modded Xbox here at home which has a debug dashboard running.
Though rare, some of the older chips have "MCP" instead of MCPX, just thought I'd throw that out. -Gamerfreak
Perhaps it's not an indicator on it's own, but with all the other pointers (such as Debug Kit sticker) I'd say it would be a relatively safe bet even if the unit had been opened ;-) Good luck with it!
Well, I bought it after looking at the chip number, and everthing seems all right. Suddenly load all NeoGeo roms *do* fit in memory. It came with a much more colorful dashboard then I'm used to, maybe it was meant for journalists.
Sure... here's a screen grab, as compared to the old version, with a much older version number. Recognize it? The version number has 4 hits in google, as compared to 5 for the old one, so it's probably not something very exotic.
Thank you. Thats a setting on the dashboard. If I remember correctly if you go under tools you can find it
Ah, yeah the OLD one you mention is earlier, but the NEW one is what most people are familiar with on their current units so it's sadly not that exotic. It is a bit of a jump in design eh! Nice little Sonic Icon there bud ;-)
Thanks, I wish I could take credit for it. You can see the progress in MS's dashboard design; this one seems much closer to the X360 dashboard. Does anyone know whether it's possible to have a debug Xbox startup with another xex? I don't really dare to touch the initialization file that points to the startup xex without being sure what I'm doing.
Anything is possible but if you dont have a recovery cd and not sure what you are doing. I would be very careful. you could end up with a great paperweight
