I picked up a really, really cheap Naomi UR. It belonged to a friend of mine who mistakenly purchased two on eBay. When he picked them both up he decided to sell off the one in poorer condition, so this was an amalgamation of parts from each unit. It arrived in bits and I had to wade through a tray of spares. It was filthy (as usual), but once the majority of arcade units are cleaned up it's amazing how they come back to life. The idea with this one was to convert it during the summer to a custom cabinet for a specific title or use it with a 360 pad hack. Last night I decided to go for a custom "Cosmic Smash" cabinet. Which looks like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cosmic_Smash_Poster.png I immediately took the unit to pieces and gave it a bit of a clean. Under the grime it came up not bad at all, especially considering the amount I'd paid for it. I need to replace 1 cable plus some missing parts, such as the coin chute, coin door (it has been forced open at some point in it's life) and give the base & plastics a full respray. Other than that, it'll do until I can get a 1p panel and track down or commission Cosmic Smash artwork.
Hah, it actually looks better than mine does (haven't completely cleaned mine yet though). What did you use to clean it? It does look so white without the sidecovers on the legs. Cosmic Smash is one titles I'm looking out for now, but sadly one hasn't popped up yet on ebay/AO/sega-naomi.com. Edit: Found it: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=378112&postcount=14 I knew you already posted it somewhere, just couldn't remember what thread. Now hope I can get something similar here.
It really does need a complete respray, it may look white, but the paint has been touched up by someone else and they've made a bad job of it. I'm considering taking it to a paint shop along the road as they can sand blast and bake it properly. Need to cost it up though. I've only seen Cosmic Smash pop up a couple of times for sale since I purchased mine. Andy Geezer (AGS) had one for months and months and nobody was buying it. I thought the Dreamcast version was excellent, so bought it about a year ago. Ask around as a few people have it.
Phwoaaaaar you should put not safe for work tag in the thread title this is hot stuff. Pumped to see you fix this one up parris. Hopefully ill be getting few really shitty ones as a pub in town is having a clear out of there lockup and they used to have a simpsons arcade machine!!!! heres hoping!
Sandblasting would be really expensive though, I guess. Was the unit that cheap you can afford that without spending too much for it to be profitable (i.e. not being better off getting a better conditioned one)? I will ask around for it but I am in no hurry. I am also very tempted to pick up a GD-rom setup and a couple of games (like Monkey Ball SuperPang is selling  ) but as there's a shipment of cheap Aero City's coming over to the Netherlands mid februari and I am trying to save a bit up for that. Fair conditioned ones for €350, that's a steal if you ask me!
You had an "Arcade boner" Yes I too love things getting striped town to bits. And like you, I love Parris threads. I aways read through his restoration threads. Please keep it coming !
The next time I strip Naomi naked, I shall warn you of the explicit nature of the nudity. She really was full-frontal h: I hope that you managed to contain your excitement whilst at work? No embarrassing and awkward gurgling or groaning noises :noooo: The lockup clear out sounds good! If you need any specific images or whatever when you get hold of the units then let me know. Would be interesting to see what you dig up. There's a guy I know who can sand blast cheaply. How cheaply I am not sure, I need to show him the unit and see what he says. If it works out too expensive, then yeah I'll be sanding the unit down myself! I would love Rylok's Aero Tables that he's bringing in at the same time. Far too expensive for me though. The Aero City looks good for E350 though! Wow! Wished I lived in the Netherlands! This might be one of my last for a while as I have a new contract and also Uni at the end of the year. We shall see. However, I was thinking of a guide to taking a few of the cabs apart.
So I stripped it right down and rebuilt it, cleaning off the leg artwork and paint using Nitromors. I've obtained a suitable CP panel (from a Naomi gun cabinet) so I can fabricate a custom 1p panel. I've also obtained reproduction Cosmic Smash artwork and a Naomi UR subwoofer. I fitted Sony speakers to the unit. It's coming along nicely.
