I think if an Elite came out with the new chips I might sell mine and get that, but right now I guess its just as susceptible to crapping out.
Yeah, I'm hoping to get an Elite with my first paycheck of the summer. I've got four games and I can't play them!!
All joking aside my 360 Red ringed with in the first 15 minutes I owned it. I fixed it by attaching and reattaching the cables and plugging my 360 into the wall rather than a power strip. Usually as far as I know 360 issues are faulty Disc drives not mother board issues like it's rumored to be. But there's so much anti microsoft sentiment it's really hard to guage just how much of a problem 360s really are causing their users. My 360 was made in August 2006 and besides the initial red ring problem and a few freezes the first few weeks I had it it's been smooth sailing. I know 2 people that had near launch units that lasted 6 months to a year but nobody I know has a 360 made after July of last year with any issues. All my friends with 360s (almost all of them) have had no issues at all with them.
I'm calling bullshit. Pretty much everyone here who's posted up that their 360's died has started their post with "It's a great console, I love it, but..." so they aren't anti-MS at all. They're just legitimate consumers who are pissed off with a high failure rate.
It could well be motherboard issues, if MS has moved to lead-free soldering to meet the EU Reduction of Hazardous Substances rules. The move to lead-free has been causing headaches for the electronics industry, as higher temperatures/stress are involved in the soldering/IC packaging. I've also seen an article indicating problems from 'tin whiskers' (crystaline growths) that cause shorts. Don't (yet) have a 360, so not commenting from person experience, BTW.
Most of the problems are with the X-Clamps used to hold down the heatsinks... The numbers pretty much explain it all: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=595746
My 5 PS2s in varying states of functionality (not a one can do everything a new unit can) would like a word with you.
I just sent my poor 360 in today. Hopefully i'll be back on Live soon....with some sweet 5.1 speakers if I can find the cables I need!
Looks like my douchebag 360 is on the verge of dying again. It's froze on me about 10 times the last two days....fun stuff.
Ouch. That really sucks. By any chance, do you know when the 65nm chipset is supposed to start making its way into the 360s?
