This was on the Japan Yahoo thread, but could this be a SuperCD prototype? Is it a caddy based CD-ROM?

I believe it is a Panasonic Writable Optical Disk. Text on disk is "Panasonic PD Cartridge LM-R650A Single Sided Rewritable 650MB"

Nintendo did toy around with the idea of using media like that. Maybe it is a prototype? It could also be an elaborate hoax too as that looks like a fairly standard SNES mobo with something attached to it. Can someone make out what revision it is?

I can't. I think this may have been a later prototype for a SNES-CD, as PD drives could read CD's.

Why post stuff like this once the auction has ended? The auction started on June 30th and finished on July 5th.

Anyway, the text says nothing about prototypes or CD system. It does say it doesn't work as far as the seller knows. It also sold for a cheap price. Would have picked that up myself just for curiosities sake.

I know that. Mean there's no point posting the auction link now. Kind of got my hopes up for a moment :)

The box it is in is a cable distribution box, and a retail board.

The cartridge will not fit inside with the top closed.

There's no chips to be seen on the cartridge, it has a SCSI type connector of it's own. It's most likely for a ROM emulation box.

So if I had to guess, it would be a system for having CD-ROM data via the EXT bus.
Some cartridge system would pull data from the PD disc (worm drive) via the EXT bus into the rom emulation system.

It looks too crude to be Nintendo made, they are really pro with their proto hardware.

Ah, case closed then based on NintenFan's dates (also confirmed on Wikipedia).

Sorry to get your hopes up Yakumo. I was catching up on some forums and almost choked on my coffee when I saw the Yahoo JP thread, so thought it worth highlighting.

I don't think this is WORM Kevin, it is rewritable.

I remember seeing this and immediately skipping over it, as it seemed pretty plainly obvious to me that it was a hack-job made for running backups.
