Just a quick question and a bit of advise really, is there anyone on here who collects comics (marvel, Darkhorse, Image, topcow etc) and manga (mostly darkhorse and indie stuff) and also Sci-fi books (mainly starwars, doctor who etc)

Basically after 25+ years of collecting the above i've decided to sell up a huge chunk my collection and want to know the best way of going about it

about 10years ago i used to heavily be into the comic collecting scene and could recite values of comics off the top of my head, now i really wouldn't have a clue

Apart from the obvious of ebay, where else could i try for valuations and or sale of my collection, i realise that some, if not all of it is nowhere near the value ive paid for it, but, i wouldn't want to be ripped off if i took it all to a comic store etc. and was offered 10p a issue

Any one on here know of somewhere either online or local (by local i mean UK) where i could go for advise?

I have hoarded this stuff for too long and whilst i did enjoy collecting it, have moved on and really have no interested anymore so would rather it got sold off to people who would appreciate it more than i do!

I'm a comic and manga collector, probably have a collection of 8,000 + books (that's a low end esitmate.)

Sadly the comic scene isn't what it used to be. Gone are the days when you could buy comics and quickly sell them for vast profit. Then agian I like it that way, keeps the speculators away collecting stamps where they belong.

Best bet I would say is go through and seperate anything you think may have value - #1 or early issues of any particular series, stuff you know is rare, signed books, golden and silver age books, etc. There's several sites you can get decent prices from (or buy one of those overstreet guides.) Take the stuff you know is worth something and sell those one at a time.

For the chaff, best bet is to sell it all at once or in large chunks, either through ebay or go to some of your local comic shops and see what they'll give you for them. Selling them locally you'll get a fraction of what they're probably worth, but it's the time involved that you're saving - sure you could eventually make more money selling them for a dollar a piece on Ebay but who has the rest of thier lives to do that?

Personally, I'll take any UK Transformers books off your hands for you. Plus any comics you have with giant monsters in them, it's a passion.

If you really want to get full value, take them to a shop/convention and get them graded, you'll consistently get more money for them.

However, it's a buyer's market out there, most of everything from the mid-90s on is pretty much worthless nowadays. It's pretty sad when the majority of the collectables you've spend a decade accumulating are pretty much worthless. Such is the fate of the comic book geek.... we are a lonley species... but the rewards are truley endless at times....

I'm not much of a collector per se, but I do have nice collections of my favorite stuff. My favorite comic series is Scud: The Disposable Assassin, of which I have all the issues (and subsequently, everything Fire Man Press put out). I am EXTREMELY that after 10 years Rob Schrab is FINALLY finishing the story.

Other than that I just have all the appearences of Carnage (from Spider-Man).

Now my Dad on the other hand, was big into comics when HE was growing up, so he has piles and piles of stuff from the 70s-90s. In fact, I virtually learned to read off of Bronze Age Marvel comics. :icon_bigg

Yep! Issue #21 FINALLY came out last month. I am greatly anticipating issue #22 this month.

If you never read it, I highly recommend picking up Drywall Unzipped, since that has A LOT to do with the series' backstory in general.

Also, once all is said and done, Schrab is releasing a giant collection of ALL the Scud comics (if this will include La Cosa Nostroid, Drywall Unzipped, and The Drywall & Oswald Show is beyond me), so that'll be pretty neat for sure.

Sweet! I don't have all the old back issues but I've got most of them. I'll have to look for #21 this weekend.

I used to collect a lot more than I do now, today I buy them mainly for the artwork (seeing how that's what I want to draw comics.) I don't really follow particular stories very much anymore. Still there's a lot of good stuff worth buying out there.

You know, I've been thinking about trying to find something read. Right now I only have a subscription to the new Scud issues at my local shop. Been leaning towards Batman or some sort of DC stuff (since I was a Marvel kid almost exclusively, but eh... after the Clone stuff in Spider-Man I've been incredibly apprehensive of Marvel's stuff). Any suggestions?

I've been collecting comics since I was 4 (my first one was a Superman-Spiderman team-up), and around 7 years ago I switched my spanish collection to one only with US comics (mainly DC, Marvel and a bit Dark Horse, Image and others). I think that eBay would be the best place to sell the collection, and although you'll get less money if you sell them in lots, it should be much faster.

Imho, Marvel has improved much with Joe Quesada as EIC, with excellent runs like Bendis on Daredevil or New Avengers, Brubaker's Cap (great Steve Epting art), Morrison's New Xmen or Whedon's Astonishing. Millar's works have also been great, like Ultimates or Civil War (much better by far for me than Infinite Crisis). Spiderman, after some turmoil with the One More Day storyline is heading for a better time in Brand New Day.

DC has great titles too, like All Star Superman (All Star Bats is kinda strange, not really my stuff), the new run on JLA, Green Lantern or the Vertigo line. I expected more from Morrison's Batman and events like Identity Crisis and Infinite Crisis didn't mange to live up to my expectations.

Outside the classic DC/Marvel comics I'd take Planetary, Fables, The Walking Dead (well, and Marvel Zombies) or Hellboy as some really fun comics.

Yeah Marvel has definetly come back in a big way since the clone debacle. Check out the Planet Hulk storyline, excellent all around.

My Missus is a big Terry Pratchett fan and has most of the books in Hardback, plus a couple of them signed as well, i've never really been a fan, tried to read a couple now but not been able to get into them

As for the comics, for the time being ive decided to keep a majority of then, sorting through them has bought back too many good memories, and i really cant part with them. Although still going to sell off some of the manga and Indie titles

But a lot of my books ive decided to sell on, mostly Starwars , Buffy and Early Doctor who, and have spoke to a few local second hand bookshops who all seem keen to take them off my hands, so will wait and see who offers the highest price for them, as well as some ill be selling off privately and through eBay etc.

My offer for any UK Transformers books still stands.

You guys are probably gonna massacre me, but I've never really been into Manga per se. I find the vast majority of it slow moving and lacking in the art department.

Before you hunt me down and kill me, I do enjoye several manga titles, but it takes a lot to get me into it.
