Honestly I have a hitch that DTL kits might have the ForbidDVDP flag hard wired as "ON" in the mechacon firmware...

Do Test systems allow sceCdReadDVDV on Sony PS2 DVDs and/or DVD-Rs with the master disk header? I know that ReadDVDV works on PS2 DVDs on retail systems, having executed that myself.

On the PS1, you could read disks that didn't pass protection by telling the drive to play the data track as a CD audio track, then manually triggering DMA to read out the contents of the sector buffer as it was reading. When doing this, though, you were on your own when it came to sync and error correction. Also, there wasn't a feasible way to grab every sector, so you had to repeat sectors or use an error correction system that accommodated for that problem. That trick might work for CDs on PS2, but like on PS1, it's probably too unreliable to use to make a CD ESR.

I came up with this trick for PS1 on my own. Datel independently discovered it, probably before me, and released a version of GameShark/Action Replay that could use such disks to install firmware updates. They later figured out how to master PS1 CDs with the SCEx wobble groove outright, obviating the technique.

It was not discovered by Datel... It was someone on the scene which came with the idea, had some agreement with Datel. The deal went sour and each side parted their way angry with each other. The said data CD method wrapped as AUDIO CD is known as "UMCDR".

Here some of the confusion it created at PS2DEV forums:

Edit: After reading a little more on it, the person who developed the format was Drakonite. And the original goal was use it only for legal homebrewing.
