I actually think I'm going to start one. Seems like a fun and inexpensive way to get myself out there. Although I don't think many people would have me haha.
Hmm... I'm all for the fair use of fan art when it comes to personal projects and the like. But if your aim is to sell them, that's crossing the line a bit. i.e. If an artist cannot make money off of fan art without a license, why should someone else?
My website is dansprojects.com but there isn't much to see, mostly just a few little apps for my racekar http://www.dansprojects.com/itr/spec/ http://www.dansprojects.com/itr/parts/
Yea..... it's the age old debate of everything is always cool until someone try's to profit from it. The minute someone slaps a price tag on something, then lines have been crossed. Same goes for modding consoles, stealing mp3's, etc.... Use a google image search to do ANY for profit work, and your a bad guy. Hate to break it to you, but it happens all the time. That doesn't prove either of us is right however. It just means it's commonly done. We develop designs to customers specs before any commissioned work is done. I've also never claimed to be the artist who designed the artwork from the ground up. Our customers are 100% aware of our process and are more than satisfied with the produced results. I will say that if you have ever seen one of our finished products, it's obvious the amount of time and detail that is put into one. Why I should not be compensated for that, is obviously whats on the table for debate. Art is subject, and I 100% respect your opinion, and I'll defend to the day I die, your right to speak your mind. All's I can say is we can, and we do sell them. Not a ton of them, but customers are more than willing to commission the work simply cause the lack the skill to do it themselves. I appreciate you voicing your concerns however.
I thank you for listening to my concerns. Well yes and there are several reasons for that. For starters there is Copyright https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright . And if that wasn't enough there's the issue of fair use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use and a creative commons license https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons . If you're willing to ignore all of those for the sake of profit, you won't be winning any conscientious customers and could land in hot water with some people. The Achilles' heel with those is that stealing MP3s is in fact illegal and not covered by fair use in any way. The same goes for using Google for finding images to use. Google doesn't own the copyrights to them nor are they able to grant a license for them. It doesn't matter if you have or haven't if you're using something without consulting its possible license or at the least, asking the original author or copyright holder. For instance, I often use creative commons for fan art for the fact I feel fair use should be explored. A non-commercial use is selected because by law, only the copyright holder or those with licenses are able to profit. I've no qualms with people crafting things, I'm actually all for that part. Hard work deserves compensation, which is in itself part of the issue. To profit off of others in some way no matter how minuscule, is very unscrupulous. As I respect your opinions as well. This is a one time voicing of concern as I'd rather not derail Shane's fun thread into off topic territory. To everyone else, I'll be randomly checking out your websites because it's lunch time and I actually have a little time to kill.
Just done a major update on my website http://www.theoriginalxboxshoppe.weebly.com Still needs a bit of tweaking though
*sidesteps spooky things* Hey @Nidge that's a very olde school looking site there, you've got everything in pounds!
