I was looking at this 'CycloWiz' chip for the Wii and wondering if there's any point to an NR Reader now? It seems that the CycloWiz allows GC Homebrew etc to run so surely anything that could be burnt to NR discs would just run when burnt to a normal DVD and bunged into a modded Wii? Or am I missing something? I only ask because I had NR Reader set as my fave eBay search and one has just come up, figured it was probably a waste of money unless I just want a selection of GC dev hardware?
But how are you going to rip a NR disc withouth an NR reader? As far as I know you can only rip NR discs with a NR reader. And once you ripped the NR and put it on a normal dvd or mini-dvd it is playable on a chipped cube, so also on a chipped wii.
OK, how about if I put it like this: If I wanted to play games only available on NR discs, can't someone just stick em on a normal DVD and we play them on modded Wii or GC? I know a modded Wii would be the same as a modded GC but I'm just thinking about how 12cm discs are much more freely (and more cheaply) available compared to 8cm discs? Basically, is there any point to me buying an NR reader, honestly
you should be able to rip an NR disc with the recently coming up wii rippers (using a GDR-8163B PC drive). The unscrambling is different. However it's actually more easier than a real wii/gc disc, not sure if the public tools can do that.
I think a big problem right now is finding a wii. Unfortunently It is easier to find an nr reader than it is to find a Wii
you can? that would be sweet so I finally can see what's on my discs xD thought when I have the $ I will probably try to get a NR reader anyway as I need it for something else.
Hm, it's not as easy as i thought, as NR-discs have invalid (=wrongly seeded) DMI data, too. What you *can* do is (i've just checked that) to take a GDR-8164, put in a gamecube disc, then hotswap to the NR-disc, startup a dumper. It should detect the correct gamename, and you should be able to dump. unscrambling should work as before if you take any of the "brute force" unscramblers (most of the GOD/WOD unscramblers are). Not a nice method, let's see if we can work out a better method. GDR-5000 also fails because it cannot read DVD-R properly. hmmm.
So, theoretically, wouldn't you be able to trick the (retail) GC into a raw reading mode similar to the one you described with the LG Drive? Then stream the scrambled image to your PC, descramble it, burn it, and play it back? I recently got ahold of an NR Disc yet I don't have an NR Reader (and can't find one anywhere). If this method is possible, it would save me frm having to track down an NR Reader.
what just comes to my mind...is it possible to rip/read NR discs with the writer? never tried it and now that i have the idea i don't have anymore NR discs
I have been wanting to test this but I've not had much time actually fiddling with it. Might try next month when I'm finally home again.
