i have a small model railroad, does that count? i really do like traveling by train, IF i'm not in in a hurry and just backpacking
I am certifiably a railway nut. Without a doubt, the best way to see the world go by & responsible for the creation of numerous awesome structures like the Forth Bridge & Grand Central Terminal...
Hmmm Railways, I may be mostly interested in Swiss rolling stock. I have a small collection of swiss model trains, and also work in the railway sector. So yes, I'm a fan, but nothing like a ferrophile.
Haha cool there´s some in this forum! I got the railway fannism in my childhood, because trains are very extended by there and loads of people use them, I always use them for travelling and for moving around the area. ZhueriHB: metric gauge railways are simply great, be them there or wherever. The suburban railways of Valencia are metric too, and of course they don't have that spirit that RhB and such trains have but still travelling in them is a different experience to travelling in a broad gauge train.
I have a pretty sweet Lionel train set my dad gave me from when he was young. It's way detailed and the engine is 99.9% metal so it weighs like 5lbs.! Not sure what scale it is  -ud
Yes, N-scale mostly, but i do collect english HO (OO) scale stuff, hornby, bachmann etc...is actually cheaper to buy english locomotives and rolling stock then it is to buy North american made stuff... While in England, we took a short ride on a saddle tank 0-6-0 at the lakeside and haverwaithe? I still need to finish my current n-scale layout now that i think about it! Ryan
I'm quite lucky in that we have a light railway nearby, plus a little further afield (but within reach) not one but two full-size steam railways. Oh, and the Orient Express still passes through here, I believe. On scarce occasions, they have been known to run a steam train on the main line, too! I'm not a fanatic, but I do like the old steam engines. I used to have model railway as a kid (mostly OO gauge but also some N gauge and I got what I think was HO gauge from somewhere, too - like OO but the couplings were sideways hooks), and we had one of the largest model railways in Europe here once upon a time - a scale model of the Channel Tunnel. As for modern trains, they serve a purpose. I must say that they tend to be more reliable nowadays, and the new stock we have here is pretty comfortable, the PA system actually works, and the scrolling displays are handy... not to mention the self-opening doors! I quite enjoy travelling on trains when I'm not in a hurry (e.g. on holiday) and just observing people in their everyday lives. You get such a variety of people on trains - both regular and underground. I quite enjoyed using the Subway when I was in New York. It seemed a pretty efficient method of travel, and I guess quicker than the London Underground in some places, as you don't have huge escalators to travel down!
