i bought a non tmss genesis from ebay and it is the va2 model revision. the va2 motherboards have the sound chip bug where sometimes the audio gets very distorted depending on the sound task. should i even keep this thing? seems like the VA3-VA6.8 boards are way better. the va2 has good sound but every time you hear some nasty distorted sound i just want to go back to my va3 genesis. should i keep this thing or sell it? would i get more money for it if i sell it as a VA2 model because they are potentially rare? thanks bros

Would inserting a 32X help the sound? If you like/own a 32x, maybe this could become your at-all-times 32X system.

sound fault's can be many things like z80 or sound ram, there's a few ic's that deals with the sound.

I have a Japanese VA0 and sometimes Bare Knucle2/Streets of Rage glitches the sound.

As long if the issue isn't something on the ASIC it should be solvable. VA2 use the same ASICs as VA0 (315-5308/315-5309) as far I know. VA3 uses 315-5364 in place of 315-5308 and those ASICs handle all BUS signaling including the way Z80 accesses the cartridge bus for readout of data while playing music. The Z80 doesn't have access to the cartridge all the time so it keeps the Z80 program on it's RAM but it can access the cartridge at times the 68000 isn't using the BUS so it keeps doing sporadic accesses to the cartridge to read sample or FM synth data from game cart. If that signaling timing is bad, the Z80 might miss reads, causing slight sound glitches.

A VA2 board is reasonably rare. I'd just apply the sound fix that's around for it and then use it for games.
I mean, it's a real classic and the original design!

    Edit:
I tried to find a tutorial for fixing the sound issue but had no luck. You may want to look for "fix preamp VA2" or similar. This is a note on it:
