Hi there, Months ago I got a japanese copy of this arcade-perfect conversion, with a white Saturn (HST-3220) as well. To my disappointment I found out that the game wouldn't pass the SEGA screen. I goggled it and apparently there's a couple of Saturn games (Afterburner as well??) that will play on any Saturn (duh!) but not some white ones (wtf??) So, I've been playing the MD port this week and now I really wanna play the Saturn conversion. Is there any workaround to make it play on my Saturn or I really have to buy myself a grey Saturn just for on game (I'd always keep my whitey one, I love its looks)? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4Roy1huEZM
AFAIK, there is no workaround for it. Some of the early US (perhaps JP also?) model 2 Saturns do have similar mother boards as the grey Saturns, which can play the aforesaid games. Another thing to mention is, there are re-releases of these games, that SEGA provided to people whom where complaining about this problem, for free back in the days. However, the re-releases have the same exact artwork, manual, serial number, so it is virtually impossible to find these copies, that are playable on the white saturns. Sorry mate.
Is it safe to identify an early White Saturn based on its packaging? I.e. would this play my copy of OutRun: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h327jbSGoh0/RaaVV9-j_aI/AAAAAAAAAbU/5s-jsW4F0Ec/s320/£220+buy+now.jpg ???
BTW, the box pictured are from the late production (I think I saw them back in 1998). You would have more luck finding an "outrun playable" system in the cardboardish box(1997), not the glossy box pictured above. However, judging the system by the box is most likely very unreliable. You would have more luck asking the seller about the serial number.
That's funny, I always thought the glossy box (looks more expensive) was the first run. I actually have a "cardboard"-y one, and doesn't work... Thanks for the info guys¡
That's what I'll probably do... I actually like the 100 Campaign box, but I'll probably get an unboxed one.... It's just annoying the extra espace this one-game machine will take in my cabinet...
Sorry, I don't know what a 21pin machine is? Does it have to do with 21pin scart video connexions? Just FYI, I plug my consoles to my LCD through RGB scart cables, sync strike, upscaler and slg3000...
