I'm seeking a new...well actually in this case it's an OLD path. When I was 17 I wanted to be a DJ but at the time I had no money to do it. BUT NOW, I do I have several thousand dollars I can sink into getting going.

Thing is I have no idea where to start or exactly what it is I want to do. I can read music to a degree but hell if I can tell a D note from A when I hear it. I have a fondness for 90s Club music I want to recreate.

I'm also really good at putting together playlists that flow together. So I'd be a good Club/Party/ School Dance DJ, doing the latter I need to do a Catholic School dance and end a night with Danny Brown's I will. I'll never get asked back but it'd be worth it.

coming from a person that is in the Live sound industry don't get into it, let alone try to start up your own sound company. its not worth it from the money that you will spend in gear and what you will get from the client...

Also there is a lot more to being a DJ than just making playlists you also need to know how to be able to read the audience and be able to make yourself present as the MC... if you want to start in the music industry start off as a live sound tech / stagehand.... myself I am more of a FOH sound engineer I've worked everything from big main stream shows for like BB King, dave Matthews band and Big and Rich then everything from your local town festivals.

    HMM

Yeah I'm totally lost, I DO NOT want to waste 8 years of my life going to school full time for Psychology where there's a pretty good chance my ideas will get me stripped of my credentials the second I earn them.

So that leaves me with something SOMETHING in music. I can never shake that itch I get playing stuff I get lost in it and the high from playing doesn't leave me for a few days after.

I could DJ, I could try making my own House tracks if I knew the right equipment, I'd love to manage a small Jazz Club. Maybe Teach Jazz history to a bunch of stuck up rich ungrateful white kids.....

I know being involved in music doesn't pay as well as what I was going for. But I want to be somewhere where maybe just MAYBE I can make a difference and something in music might be that path.

you were saying that you can read music and you can know what the notes should sound like that's even better... do you know how to play any instruments if so very good... your best bet is to get involved with a church worship team and then go from there

It depends on what you want to get from it. Are u looking to become a technically skilful turntablist or a super star DJ who can press a play button?

Hopefully you want to do the former, in which case consider getting equipment for vinyl record djing. CD decks and digital decks are popular these days but direct drive turntables will give you the most versatility if you choose to progress to turtablism.

Don't worry about reading music, it's more about beat matching and music bars. 90's club is a good start as it follows a 4 beat rhythm and is easy to practice with.

At my age I'm not sure I have the reflexes for the the former. The Latter does take more skill than just pushing play you have to know how to make a continious mix and make sure the songs seemlessly flow into each other.
