I found out about a very interesting game in progress, called "Retro World"

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/557605893/retroworld-relive-your-gaming-childhood-as-a-retro

The game reminds me very much of Retro Game Challenge for the DS, which I totally loved, but it looks like Retro World will take the concept to a whole new level. Unfortunately, Retro Game Challenge didn't sell too well in North America, which is why its sequel never officially made it here. I suspect that the same lack of interest will exist for Retro World, unfortunately. Nevertheless, it certainly appears that it could turn out to be a retro game lover's dream.

I couldn't help but contribute to the project, as retro games are about the only kind of games that I can get into.

From a review: "Ever wanted to be a gamer in a game about gaming?"

ugh. This is like when Bart Simpson refused to do the yard work when his mom asked, but then waits in line to play the "yard work simulator" game at the video game expo.

I'd rather play Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! than Tyke Bison's Knock Out. Old games are too accessible to trick people into thinking this is what it was like in the 80s.

I felt the same way about Game Center CX. Cosmic Gate is cute, but I just felt like it was an inferior Galaga clone (don't get me wrong, plenty of those existed in the 80s too...). I'd rather buy 1 good game than a collection of sub par ones (I feel bad for anyone who actually bought Action 52 back in the early 90s and didn't kepp it in good enough condition to at least make their money back). The overarching narrative would have to be pretty stellar for me to consider games like these. It wasn't for Game Center CX and it looks like this one won't cut it either.

And for the record, this is not a retro game. You should have put that $15 CAD towards the purchase of a pc engine & bomberman 94, or something. :)

I should start developing a game about lurking in "marketplace" sections of gaming forums, setting up ebay alerts for "twin famicom AN-505-RD", using Google translate to help determine the condition of items in Yahoo japan auction sites and teaching yourself how to solder mod chips for region free gaming. Or I could just live my life.

    Sorry, I'm extra cynical today.

Gotta love how they advertise "ex-LucasArts talent" when it's just one guy who made music for the last 10 years of LucasArts, also known as the period when they only made a bunch of shitty games.

Ahahaha, holy shit. The abuse of the world "retro" alone turns me off (e.g. the in-game graphics being pixel art does not automatically fucking equal "retro"). They misuse the term "retro" as a hipster-esque buzzword to try to appeal to a lowest common denominator, alongside the shallow game parodies. The term "retro-style/retro-esque" would've annoyed me too, but Jesus, at least that'd be a more honest fucking description. (though I will say one thing for it: I don't see many retro-wankfest games even touch the 32-bit era for inspiration.) /pettycynicism

Also, as a spriter: goddamn those are some of the ugliest character sprites I've ever seen. If you really wanna make it look "retro" (ughh...), at least make it look decent and like it'd actually come from an older game. /spritewhore

When did this happen in the Simpsons? I've never heard of this reference.

This project doesn't look interesting at all to me. I consider myself to be well into actual retro gaming and it has no appeal to me at all.

In any case it's kind of hard to think of pixel art games in this type of setting, without Earthbound coming to mind.

I got my episodes mixed up. The Yard Work Simulator is at the carnival, in the episode "Bart Carny" http://www.snpp.com/episodes/5F08. The video game expo was another episode (The Food Wife).
