So I've just discovered ioQuake 3 http://ioquake3.org and I cannot put into words how amazing it is to be playing this game again in widescreen HD on my Mac, it's a wonderful "port". I was lucky enough to have a PC that could run Q3 maxed out when it was first released and I became addicted to it and I think I'm becoming addicted again. Was wondering if anyone here still plays online and if so knows of any good servers? A lot of the public servers that come with iOq3 are custom railgun servers full of overly hardcore experts. Sadly there aren't many public servers running good old fashioned stock DM.
You could just try Quake Live which is very very similar to what Quake 3 was. You just play it on your browser.
Tried it. It's awful and doesn't support OS X, I don't spend much time in my Windows partition if I can help it.
ioquake3 is excellent i'd play it if i had it setup, used it a while back to play the urban terror mod which was also really cool counterstrike style total conversion
haha, me and a load of mates used to LAN party for days on Urban Terror. Those were the days! I've played Q3 Live but not tried any 'ports' recently. Might give it a go, I've got all the other Quakes installed and souped up like Darkplaces Q1 and Q2 berserker, both excellent revivals.
I've just got a copy of Urban Terror and it doesn't seem to find any servers. I tried to create one just to see what the game was like but it crashes with a memory error. Shame, will take a look at it properly tomorrow. Any other mods worth checking out?
Don't know of any other mods off the top of my head really. Urban Terror will look terrifically dated nowadays I'd think. Kinda like Counter Strike 1.6 but ever so slightly better maybe in terms of looks. When we were running it none of us had broadband so we had to sneak it off the college network...heh. I wouldn't have thought anyone would be playing that any more anyway, plus you'd need vanilla Quake 3 to run it, not a source port. I'd say your best bet is to Youtube it, that ship has sailed as far as playing it I'd have thought. EDIT: huh maybe people are still playing... My GOD that takes me back!
from memory UT no longer needs original Q3A it went standalone i'm currently downloading it now http://www.urbanterror.info/servers/home/ server list
I have the standalone version too. Getting nothing in the server lists and don't seem to be able to find a way to manually input one either.
My router will reset any time a client attempts to contact the Master Server. Something about stock router firmwares that cause this problem. I'd rather not waste time updating my router firmware to solve the issue of not being able to read from the Master Server, so to manually join a game you use the console (~) and type /connect:urlort I had played pretty much every day up until a couple years ago. Now I play maybe once or twice a month on Vogon servers. I found one of my profile on Gametracker: http://www.gametracker.com/player/BLUDGEON[atr]/66.150.121.128:10000/ I'm not really good anymore. I used to do tournament and practice really does help out. Keeps you sharp.
A few places I've worked over the years have played Quake 3 (amongst others) on LAN, when the offices are usually empty. I sometimes play, as I like Quake 3, but I much prefer Unreal Tournament myself (and I was really disappointed that UT's source code was never released, unlike Q3 - you have to give id Software credit for making so many of their engines open source and so letting them be ported to almost every format you could imagine).
I enjoyed both equally at the time of release (remember watching a documentary about the making of UT on a PC Gamer Demo disk and getting so excited about it). However I find that UT just hasn't aged as well as Q3 and like you said with the lack of an Open Source port, playing it on modern systems leaves a lot to be desired. Q3 on the other hand with a few HD settings could easily be a new release.
