I had my eye on a Dreamcast in Sofmap in Osaka for a while, but the I finally made up my mind and decided to get it, it had been sold earlier that day. So I've been looking around for others, but haven't found anything, other than a couple of "junk" consoles in Akiba Super Potato for 500 yen each. Now, I ask the question just to get an idea what the chances of them working would be. I know when Hard Off sell stuff as junk, it'll usually work, but given that Super Potato's skankiest standard DC costs over 2500, I wasn't too sure (although th price difference between their loose and complete GCs is about that as well).

I think in Japan JUNK = Loose/sold As Is. Good chance it'll work but the cables werent with it so they didn't bother to test it.

Normally Japanese JUNK items are in perfect condition. I've bought many JUNK games that are mint but then there are times when Junk means Junk. Just be careful.

I was thinking about getting a Seaman Dreamcast as well, so I could test it out with the cables from that and, worst comes to worst, just ditch it if it doesn't work. If not, which place is generally the cheapest for loose cables?

I don't know because you are probably in Tokyo but down here Hard Off has loads of cables for pretty much every japanese console at cheap prices.

The Super Potato staff are a bit more tech savvy then a lot of places, so Junk is likely to mean something that is not in a condition they can clean properly (although generally not consoles) or it has isssues. I bought a couple of junk consoles from Super Potato a several years ago (as I just needed some display consoles) and all of them were junk, 2 did not work (White Game Gear, Gameboy Light) at all and 1 worked but had a dead audio output (PC Engine GT) but for 1500 yen I was not going to complain.

You're just after the case? Buy the seaman dreamcast if its cheap enough and swap out the innards.

Nah, the Seaman I was thinking of getting because the price is alright, but I'd probably just keep it on a shelf if the junk one works. If it doesn't, I'd bin the junk one before flying back to Italy and play on the Seaman one.

Sofmap's retro store in Akihabara got a Dreamcast in for ¥1230 today with all leads, so I just got that instead.
