I did a few cool things for the GBA, just curious, is anyone round these parts developing for it still?
Funny enough, I've always been interested in homebrew for the GBA, never really looked around for a few tutorials to get started though. So I've just stuck with the PSP.
The problem is examples and documentation. I always found that since I got into GBA programming late, most of the good libraries, tutorials, and documentation were starting to get neglected. So finding the help I needed wasn't as easy as it could have been. After I decided GBA was a dead end, I did dab into PSP programming, but I found it a royal pain not having any emulators on the PC to try code against (always needed to copy it to PSP to try). It made things slow and not very fun. Eventually, I got into DS programming since it's current, can be emulated on a PC, and has loads of info for it. PALib, as an example, has (IMHO) a godly amount of examples that come with it when compared to what you usually get. Makes learning so much easier since you can manipulate real life examples, compile, and see what happens.
I'd say that GBA dev now is as easy as it's always been. There aren't that many people to help but if you use something like SGADE or HAM the documentation is definitely there.
Really? I tried looking at HAM, but I couldn't get the code examples, or tutorials I needed to get my head around it. Not even sure if I remember finding HAM documentation. Is HAM still available? The last time I checked, I vaguely recall the website being abandoned with nothing working.
GBA is fun when you want something really basic to play around with. I kind of miss coding directly to the HW registers like I did on GBA. Even when I moved on from homebrew to comercial GBA development I always end up being the guy at work who would go around the engine and write stuff directly to the GBA HW. =) I'd love to go back to GBA one day in the future but I would not do it with out a HW devkit (ugg, should have never sold the one I had to work, should have only loaned it). DS development I never cared for. It's sort of like GBA but took out all the fun in GBA development with out any rewards. Personally now I prefer the PSP as it's powerful enough to let you do some neat things in 3D yet simple enough with it's OpenGl like interface. As well you can do some nice looking 2D games. There is a PSP emulator out there that is getting better day by day but I prefer running on a real system. The only thing that makes PSP development awesome is having a real devkit but not everybody can get their hands on one. =)
Funnily enough the site does seem to be down right now... I thought I had checked on it a few days ago. There is a tutorial on it that's still up http://www.aaronrogers.com/ham/, and someone even wrote a book dedicated to it http://www.aaronrogers.com/ham/Books/PTGBA/.
Yeah me too (on the GBS stuff), was a dream to develop for, just like being back in the Amiga days! Did you do anything for the PSP-go. It's quite appealing to me; what with having proper controls (not like iPhone touch screen malarky). Oh wait! You have PSP devkit?
