A lot of games can be considered "story-driven," but yes, I enjoy games with decent plots... but gameplay takes priority for me.

As for "JRPGs" in general, I think I liked them more before voice acting became a necessity.

For example, the details in Final Fantasy VII seemed more interesting to me before I heard the characters actually speaking them in later sequels/prequels. Similar to how idiotic the storyline seems in the newer Resident Evil titles when it is told through "blockbuster-like" cutscenes.

I used too, back when I was younger, probably because I had much more spare time when at school and not doing university/work.

Now a days I find it hard to pay attention to the story or to be hooked to the same game for very long.

Not a waste of a thread. If anything, it could help others find some JRPGs that they might like they wouldn't normally have known about.

I've recently been sucked way into the Final Fantasy games. FFVI-X are all amazing JRPGs in their own right. While localization may have hurt VII and VIII, they're still engrossing to follow. Especially VIII, which had IMO a really ambitious story.

I'd love to get some recommendations on non-FF JRPs that would pull me in. Well, besides Xenogears, Chrono Trigger/Cross and Suidoken.

What about Xenogears, Chrono Trigger/Cross and Suidoken? They're the best :)

I can recommend a few Jrpg type games on the MS-DOS that everyone doesn't know about and easily to pick up and play like Flame Dragon Knights, Romance of the Forgotten Kingdom (Korean exclusive which gotten a English Translation) and Astonishia Story

Good talk! Haha, Nah I'm already aware of those. As well as Wild Arms, Phantasy Star, Grandia, Xenosaga, Legend of Dragoon, etc. Given I do have to give the majority of those a try.

Tales of Symphonia was my favourite jrpg when I was at school. Played it to completion on the Gamecube. Skies of Arcadia Legends was another one I completed on Gamecube. Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 is fantastic. As is Dragon Quest VI on SNES.

I highly enjoy story driven games as much as any other. Games don't have to be all made one way :)

Honestly, JRPGs are my favorite type of game. They've always been able to pull me in more than any other type of game.

What are some of your favorites? A top 3, possibly?

I always liked JRPGs but it's very rare for me to finish one. I normally finish one per year. Last year I finished Earthbound and Mother 3. This year I finished Final Fantasy X and started playing Mother 1 but didn't finish it.

I played a lot more JRPGs when I was younger but never finished any of them. Now I just get tired from thinking about playing a 40 hours long RPG. There is some exceptions to this but I normally play shorter games mainly because I buy more games than I have time to play but collecting is just so good and a bit addicting.

^I'm occasionally discouraged by the length of some RPGs, too.

It took me many attempts to finally sit through Final Fantasy XII, in particular. When I actually managed to do it (many years after the release), I was pretty shocked that it took me a whopping 67 hours.

On that note, however, I was largely underwhelmed with the story, as well as the final boss fight; it might actually be the only Final Fantasy game where I didn't die once during the last battle. Still, the gameplay made the overall experience worthwhile.

    Same here.

I did enjoy a lot though, FF-X, I think I got in around 90hs, and then a few blitzball matches from time to time.

Other great JRPGs that caught me, dunno if they fit here since they are strategy-rpgs actually, are the Fire Emblem games. Good stories, great battles, awesome games.

Unless Pokemon counts as a JRPG (though, it IS an RPG that originated in Japan), then no, I don't do many.

I never even finished FFVIII, and I haven't even installed the Steam version of FFVII (stupid sales taking my money)

Well, Pokemon as well, but I couldn't get through any of the ones after Gold/Silver/Crystal, just way too many new Pokemons u___u

Ahh! You should finish VIII. I know the localization kinda boffed up both the story and Squall's character, but I found it extremely satisfying.

How's that? Never looked into the changes they did because of localization, were there too many changes?
