I've got an old Motorola DCT6208 DVR/cable box that is toast but the HDD is still good and I want the shows off it. I hooked the HDD to my computer and while it shows up in the device manager and disk management the is all it does. I am pretty much a novice at this stuff so I was wondering if anyone here knows what I am doing wrong/need to do or can point me to some software that can make this pain free?

DVRs are very unlikely to use a Windows-compatible file system internally, so it's not really surprising you get no drive letter to show up. You might have more luck accessing it from Linux (just use a Live CD or sth)...
