I'm geeking out, and I love reading about the development, design decisions and choices in OS development, particularly retro ones (Windows 9x and prior, the Mac OS, etc) The shortfalls, the evolution of the GUI.. a lot. I found some stuff on an early build of the Win95 taskbar, that was interesting.. Quick couple of examples. http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/gui.ars/2 http://toastytech.com/guis/indexwindows.html http://www.guidebookgallery.org/screenshots/win31 And theres a website somewhere with tales of the Mac creation etc. Any suggestions for good reads?
You may find "The BeOS Bible" interesting. And if you want to try old betas of windows and macos, you should go here: http://win3x.org/
If you have access to it through a school, start browsing the ACM Digital Library, particularly the SIGCHI/UIST conferences and TOCHI papers.
I was going to say Chicago build 58 will show you an early start button, but you seem to have found that ;-) Don't forget the mad sitcom thing Microsoft made for the Windows 95 launch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GWQgb015Lc There were tons of articles about early versions of Linux, so you should find something on that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVTWCPoUt8w Not a lot of information, but this is a nice video on GNU by Stephen Fry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwlDZIDGoc0
If you want to know of development, this sites got some great resources to get you started: http://www.osdev.org/ http://www.osdever.net/ I also bought this book some years ago I guess it got some historical stuff too: http://www.amazon.com/Operating-Systems-Design-Implementation-Second/dp/0136386776
Here are a couple where a few old-timers discuss GUI action CHOICES: http://www.digibarn.com/collections/movies/digibarn-tv/gui-movies/xerox/index.html#parc (Xerox Star demonstration) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQ6ng1_TMN4 (Star promotional video)
That Win3x site is a goldmine. Do you know of any sites like that for vintage Mac apps? I'd kill for a copy of old Adobe software, Office, Macromedia stuff, etc.
