A couple of days ago I gave a couple of PSX games to ca friend. The surprise was when his PSOne failed to read the game: I noticed it has the old PSX bios! Anyone knows anything about this? It's not modded, maybe it's a early model? If it is, which model is it?
PSone shipped with at least bios versions 4.3 through 4.5. SCPH 900x shipped with 4.1, I don't know whether there is a version 4.2. What is it that makes you think it's old? It's possible to tell what version it is and dump it to memory cards, if you have a swap disc. smf
Early PSXs have the grey BIOS Later ones have the blue BIOS PSones (small) have the grey BIOS, with updated pics and a CD visulizer.
The bios used in almost every PSone sold at least here in Latin America is SCPH-101, I think. It's slightly different than the regular bios (a couple of effects for the Audio CD output and a different environment). I don't have an internet connection nearby (i'm posting from my phone) but soon i'll upload a couple of pictures. I don't think this is a rare bios, but all I know is what I see around.
Speaking of the visualizer, I remember when a friend of mine got his original PSX (the first model with all connectors) he also had some kind of audio visualizer bundled with it which looked mighty cool, but I think it ran off an extra disc. Does anyone remember what I´m talking about? Also my PAL PSOne has no sign of a visualizer built-in.
At least in my PSone you only have to push select while playing an audio CD to start the visualization.
The first systems that were launched in the UK came with a demo disc that included a visualiser thing long before baby universe. I remember it having a strange seagull bias too! Edit: BTW, it is the same disc that has the T-Rex and Manta Ray tech demos on it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation#Summary_of_PlayStation_models_.28to_be_completed.29 Pretty much sums everything up. It calls the PSone's BIOS "white".
I think that was the name but it certainly wasn't as described in the wikipedia entry! Rage Racer and Overboard! were a long way off at the PS launch. Edit: Edited the entry for accuracy.
