Been debating modding my ps4 console for awhile (and have even bought a fan accelerator module to fit).

Basically my ps4 runs pretty hot - I had a launch model which ran ridiculously hot - sold that then bought an xbox one - missed the ps4 so bought another 1 TB model.

I think my current one runs cooler than my launch one did but it still runs dam hot (even in an open space near a window) I always hear the fan going pretty crazy for long periods when playing Metal Gear etc for 2+ hours at a time.

I am debating opening the case, fit the fan module (that you can adjust to make the ps4 fan run at increased speed), and case mod it by cutting a fan hole on underside of console (I use my standing up with official stand) then putting a dust filter over hole.

I did the same mods on my 60gb ps3 recently and it runs a lot cooler - anyone done similar?

That's one flaw with the PS4. Although it looks more modern than the Xbox one, is smaller and has an integrated PSU, it runs too hot for comfort.
The things you mentioned before will certainly cool down your console.

don't cut a hole, you'll end up screwing with the air flow. Yeah the processors will run cooler but other things might not get any cooling!

The newer PS4s coming out should run cooler

I did kind of wonder this as they're obviously designed to cool and have air flow through a certain way. (the only thing I did wonder was if I put some small fans at the other end of the console to pull the air out and through).

I'm not really sure what to do but I know I wanna do something as I'm not happy with it how it stands :-/

You would probably only see a marginal difference in temperature if the extra fans you fitted had a higher pressure (or stronger airflow) than the stock one (I may be wrong here)..

speed the stock fan up, replace thermal paste thats about all you could do apart from shelling the console and building a new enclosure (like a lanli HTPC case for the 360).

As a man who made a lot of different PS3's model coller and silent, while making downgrade to them I can advice to:
-Change the termal paste to Arctic Cooling MX4. Seems a lot of PS4 (as PS3) from very beggining have "missed zones" without thermal paste on processor. Remove the old paste. Try to use minimal amount of new thermal paste to cover all its place. At the center of the square drop some amount of paste. One little drop.
-Place the thermal rubber (ribbon) on the other side of the processor.
-Clean all parts from dust, all. Spent more time with the cooler (fan). It must be absolutely clean.
P.S. Dont cut it, show a little more respect to PS4.) Sorry for any mistakes into my message.

if you remove the retaining ring (there is actually a tool for these) you can then throw the fan blades in the sink

How difficult is it to actually put it back together after that though?

I always just used cotton swabs personally to clean fans.

No, I meant to remove all dust from it, not to disassamble it.

I thought you meant you spent ages cleaning the fan blades..
If you remove the blades you can wash them in the sink

Well, I might be looks fool, but I often use the water jet to wash the blades directly without disassembling it. Of cource it takes time to it to be dry again.
