Namecheap are having "Move Your Domain Day" today, as a publicity stunt to steal customers from Godaddy, using their SOPA support as an excuse: http://www.namecheap.com/moveyourdomainday.aspx Godaddy, meanwhile, have issued a statement saying they're not supporting SOPA: http://www.godaddy.com/newscenter/release-view.aspx?news_item_id=378&isc=smtwsup Of course, this is a nice publicity stunt for Namecheap. They can charge less for transfers for one day only, give a dollar to the EFF and look like the good person, regardless of any bad reputation they may or may not have had. It'll attract people to them for more than just today, of course. Has anyone made the switch? Or does anyone already use Namecheap? If so, what do you think of them? Ultimately, how does changing registrar help? Yes, it shows them that you're unhappy with their policies... but it's probably still only a small percentage of users, so they probably don't care. Apparently, they're getting lots of registrations still: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16320149 Why not trust that Godaddy revoked their support, stick it out with them and donate the $7 you would have used to transfer to the EFF? Unless, of course, you're generally unhappy with Godaddy. Which I quite understand!!
GoDaddy have lost 100k+ domains, just FYI. And they have only reversed their support after people started moving domains. Facts are, the people in charge there think its a good idea.
Oh, no doubt they did it as a result of this. Still, you'd think other registrars would jump on the bandwagon if it was really them being a knight in shining armour. 100k registrations at a reduced rate and with a donation to a good cause? Who wouldn't want a piece of that? Don't forget, they have over 50 million domains. 100k is, as I said, a very small percentage of that total. And they still have a lot of signups coming in... I don't think they're too worried about losing a few! Anyway, I've been thinking about moving for some time... are Namecheap any good?
A bunch of other hosts ARE offering deals. This was all over reddit and various other sites. here is just one: http://blog.hostgator.com/2011/12/22/sopa-must-die/ plenty more, just too lazy to collect links for you.
Yakumo, lol - you wouldn't over there, I guess! Bad_Ad84, where's the domain transfer offer?! I see a code for 50% off the first month of hosting, but that is NOT domain transfer. I'm quite happy with my web server, thanks - as I stated before (and the article I linked stated), I am looking to switch my host. It's not just about offering deals though, is it? How many are making the donation? As that seems to be what everyone wants. I know that 1&1 are against SOPA. Whilst I don't think they've offered a deal per se, they did e-mail their customers: http://www.thedomains.com/2011/12/2...t-sopa-pipa-asks-customers-to-join-the-fight/ They're not the cheapest registrar or host, nor do they offer the most bang for your buck, but they are reliable. *EDIT* This list is certainly of interest, though! Good shout! http://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/nmnie/godaddy_supports_sopa_im_transferring_51_domains/
I've used namecheap for a couple of years, I don't have anything negative to say about them. As others have mentioned, they're reliable, virtually at the same price-point, and your management features are identical. Even though I'd suspect the GoDaddy higher-ups are still firm supporters of SOPA, I don't know that I'd necessarily go through the hassle of transferring my all of two domains over it, you know?
Yeah, I don't see it as worth it just for that, personally. It's a bit like items that people buy because a fraction of the cost goes to charity. They wouldn't buy the item usually, so why do they buy it? They could just give that amount to the charity, who would get 100% of it, rather than a fraction. It's basically buying a trophy to say "look at me, I support this charity". Pointless, because it doesn't really help the cause much.
What godaddy supported in the beguining, turned into a perversion at the end. that is why they dropped out. Although reddit can take credit if the want to. I have been using godaddy since 2004. I havent had an issue, besides what any other companies i have used. I get cheap domains, great customer support and lots of free stuff. lets face it before godaddy there was no such thing as private domains, or domains under 30$. and your choice of registrars was network solutions, tucows,or network solutions affiliates. im thinking everyones on the beat up the big guy bandwagon.
Exactly, It's bullshit, why aren't all these other people pulling out support for the other SOPA supporting companies? Because it's all just one big bandwagon. One that's worthy, but ridiculous.
I moved all my domains except one when he posted that video of him shooting an elephant. I just moved the site domain because they hit me with fees for some feature I haven't used in years.
GoDaddy still supports SOPA, they just don't publicly advertise it (to their paying customes/chumps) anymore. Anything else is not the truth.
I don't use either as well. I didn't know you could get domains that low though (just looked at the site). The place hosting my domain and web pages is only charging me $9.99US (if you go one year at a time. They have lower rates if you register more then one year at a time) for two domains. http://dreamhost.com/ =hugh
G'day, indeed, 100K might seem puny overall however Go-daddy will have lost more business than that. One of my biggest gripes with Go-daddy is their up-sell process in which they bombard you with useless extras you don't even need. They also make the process of setting up your hosting and uploading your website a pain in the behind as well, way too complicated. (Hostgator ftw) That said I do appreciate the fact Go-daddy wouldn't implement this kind of sales funnel if it wasn't effective. Change to Namecheap, you will not regret it.
Sopa is FUCKIN' BULL SHIT. The government should be able to throw you in the slammer for 5 years with out any paperwork or evidence just because POSTED A COPYRIGHTED IMAGE AND SUCH. What we are forgetting is sopa supporters are gay, or well thats what I want to say but, I can't say that because it that word is controversial , a slur and it isn't politically correct. Note I have nothing against homosexuals.
takeshi385: if you used correct grammar, and did not spill out your obvious homophobia thrown into the mix. You would be heard better.
