Some days ago I bought a Gals Panic PCB off ebay. It was only 1,99 euros plus shipping starting bid, so I couldn't resist... but after a bit of research, the PCB does not seem to be Gals Panic actually. PCB I bought (has not arrived yet): Actual Gals Panic referring to several sources: The game I bought seems pretty genuine to me though, considering the general impression it makes and of course the Kaneko-logo. So what game could I have bought then? I already tried to find out by myself, but was not able to find any pictures of all the pre Nova-system Kaneko games. The only thing I can say is that it's certainly no Gals Panic-game (neither II nor III and the S-parts were released on the Nova System), unless there is a different board used in certain regions what I doubt though. :katamari2
It does appear to have 'Gals' written in the top right of the pic, so maybe it is possibly just a board revision?
It's definately not a Gals Panic 2 (is a twin pcb board) and not a Gals Panic 3 (larger board, more chips, uses non DIP 68000) and the other Gals panic boards are on the Nova System (4, S, S2). It's likely to be a later revision of the board, unless of course it's been mislabeled.
PCB arrived today, but wouldn't boot up. It has indeed written "Gals Panic" on it and that very likely correct. All I got out of this board yet is a picture of a Gals Panic'ish bride in a white robe and the "Good luck!" sound when I insert coins. Along the Gals Panic I also got a Block Block board (w/jamma adaptor) which won't boot as well. Any ideas what I can do? When I switch it on there are just some random pixels and color fields that are gone at some point.
It could be a bootleg, perhaps. I'm not aware of a bootleg of Gals Panic, though. I believe it had several different versions for different territories - some were encrypted, some weren't. That's probably it. You could adjust the +5V slightly on your cabinet. Check the +5V under load - it should be 5V or maybe a tiny bit more. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to fault find. Start by checking for any signs of damage, corrosion etc. and reseating the ROMs. It gets a bit more technical after that, unfortunately!
You could also try cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner or duraglit wadding (and clean off any residue after)
I play PCBs with a supergun that has an external psu. Never had any problems with it and played another PCB after the new additions didn't work to relax, no issues there. What do you actually mean by reseating the ROMs? Physically removing & seating them in again? Can't I damage them easily, they seem pretty damageable. @aryssor Yeah, I tried to clean the JAMMA bar with contact spray, but it didn't work either. Still have to do that with BlockBlock though.
Yes, physically remove them. Yes you can damage them. Use a proper IC removal tool if you're worried. They are cheap from your local electronics store. And observe the usual antistatic precautions, of course.
I reseated the ROMs now, but nothing changed. Made a small video of what happens when I turn it on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAiVrkp6NZ8 In addition to that I took two pictures of the actual PCB in case someone is able to spot possible damages.
Dunno if this will help, but here are the dipswitch settings, maybe worth checking http://www.crazykong.com/dips/GalsPanic.txt
The maws site seems to be waiting on it's domain name being renewed, which is not very helpful, but this was on the google cache of it: http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:aKKlbDATgpwJ:www.mameworld.net/maws/driverinfo/galpanic.c+maws+galpanic&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1 Could it be a missing daughterboard? Is that an empty connection left of the middle near the top of your board?
No, there's no board missing. It sounds like the game is booting. Might be worth checking the video circuit first.
Its an empty ROM socket. According to your quotation it could be possible that there once was a rom part of another game if this PCB has really been converted to play Gals Panic. @retro How will I do that?
The Pamera-04 is a later version of Gals Panic, the IC socket should have a RAM chip in it, it's the same UM chip to the right of it...
Allright, wasted 12 bucks then. Anyone in need of some Gals Panic spareparts? I have the same problem with my Block Block PCB, will take a look if there is something missing as well.
If its RAM, just get another chip. With some chips that can be easier said than done, of course! Sadly, the manual isn't a service manual so it isn't of much help in fault finding. http://www.crazykong.com/manuals/GalsPanic.man.pdf 12 bucks isn't bad! I see there was a working board for sale in December for $40 on a newsgroup.
Would these do it? http://cgi.ebay.de/4-St-UM-6116-2-2...ryZ12949QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem It's a UM6116-2 according to the seller. The RAM block to the right of the missing one says "UM6116-K2". It looks much slimmer than the ones on the ebay photo though.
mmh.. 15 Euros for some RAM That would be 3 more than I paid for both Gals Panic AND Block Block SHIPPED. Maybe I'll just look for another GP board, they go for like 10 euros on ebay Germany... I guess the UM6116-3L wouldn't do it: http://cgi.ebay.de/6-Stueck-6-pcs-I...ryZ12949QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ? The difference between the -2 and -3 is basically that the actual 6116-2 will stand 100mA during operation and the -3 just 50mA (1microA during standby instead of 50microA). :/
Ave now you know the reason why it was so cheap ;-) MAWS is at this address: http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/
