I still have backups of my sub-site on consolevision and a lot of my code.

As far as people from the old site/irc channel, I still keep in touch with "Sayten" on a fairly regular basis. Haven't been able to figure out how to track down anyone else until now.

    This is awesome.

Near the end of college I got sidetracked from my personal development efforts/hobby by trying to fulfill my degree requirements, hold down a job and playing in a band for a few years. Started as an intern for an interesting employer while working on my degree and I've been there ever since. 10 years this month. I've been messing with Nintendo 64 homebrew the last few months. Finally got a Doom port working on Nintendo 64, which is the project that started me down the homebrew path almost 15 years ago.

I used to frequent dcemulation.com, boob.co.uk, and consolevision back circa 2001-2004ish. I saw KOS get released, experienced the almost weekly updates of new emulators and homebrew for the system, all kinds of drama in the forums, ill conceived hardware modifications, the opening (and archiving) of the bleemcast forum. It was a fun and exciting time, especially from 2001-2003 when the DC still felt relatively fresh and current gen.

I fondly remember trying out DoomDC, though I also remember HyperGamer's annoying ass ruining that for everyone by leaking your betas

regex here... author of FrNES for the DC and have many many memories of #dcdev, DcEmulation and the scene around it.

I totally don't post here, but it is one of my favourite places to read about interesting console hardware and mods.

Nice to see you around, regex. I always used FrNES over NesterDC for some reason :p

I also remember when we set up the #dcemu channel to have that massive Q&A/interview session with John Henderson, the "author" of the fake N64 emulator, and you kept coming up with complicated technical questions that he could not answer, pretty much exposing him. Hard to believe that was over a decade ago...

Hey darcagn, great to see you! I'm really happy that some people ultimately enjoyed using FrNES, including you.

Yeah that incident in particular was big drama. If I remember correctly the whole fake N64 emu was cooked up by 007 + some friends to drive traffic and interest. Still quite entertaining now even if the level of immaturity displayed is a little cringe inducing (my own included).

Yeah it kind of blows my mind how fast the time has gone by and how much has changed. I've been contemplating doing some DC hardware mods or possibly updating FrNES to run inside DreamShell using modern KOS, improving it further etc., but my free time is pretty much nonexistent. I'm super stoked to see the renewed interest in the console and the ODE projects starting to become finished products.

Wow would you look at that... Hello old friends. I designed (and subsequently redesigned) the Consolevision website when it first got started. Also ran a DC coding sub-site there with crt0 and another guy I forgot the nick of called "DC Noobs Anonymous/DNA) or something like that. Later turned to GBA dev and lost contact with the DC guys. You guys learned me a lot of useful things as well as a lot of really dumb things (71k3 t4lk1ng 71k3 th15). Oh and I also fed the tr0ll a mighty number of metal records back then. Am I to assume that the band you played in was of the headbanging sort? ;)

I know this thread is over a year old, but wow...This whole thread is a blast from the past! I'd nearly forgotten all the drama that happened in such a short span of time on dcemulation.com and the IRC channels. I used to post frequently there and on Assembler games(somehow lost my old forum account during the transition) back then up until a bit after Propeller Arena was leaked. Like others my postings slowed/died when I went to college, found other hobbies, and then got a job. I too have have become more interested in playing games on actual hardware and using flash carts/optical drive replacements instead along with finding the "best" A/V output from the classic consoles. Great to see that most people are still around in some form or another.

I wrote dc_land with a friend, which was pretty shite but used in a few homebrew projects, emulators I think. Didn't hang out much in chat though.

Sorry about dredging up such an old thread. I wanted to thank you guys for being there when I was at my lowest point in life.

I joined #dcemu back in late 2000. I was there when consolevision split off with Huma79 in 2001. I was channel owner for a while for #consolevision after Huma79 left for Japan. I think he'd also left the site details to me but I handed them off because I didn't know a thing about web development. I was the guy VerticalE is talking about with DC Noobs Anonymous. I eventually started working on projects at psx-scene, I think in 2006. I made incomplete ports of FCEUltra-mm, Snes9x, PocketSnes, etc. DCGrendel/GrizzlyAdams had given me a place to upload my stuff. I worked on ps2sdk and helped Megaman with the compiler backend for the PS2's VU0 instruction set so it would get accepted by the official maintainers of binutils/gcc in 2012/early 2013. During that time, I also was a caregiver for my disabled mom and my two autistic little brothers. Due to my problems, I became unable to continue near the end.

Back in 2002 I had a panic attack and became agoraphobic. I had isolated myself before that at 14 in 1997 knowing something was wrong with me. I didn't know what but I didn't react normally. I was more like the human version of broken glass. People kept hurting me trying to treat me normal and that ended up hurting them. A teacher had silenced me when I had finally opened up and said I wasn't normal. I was expelled from high school after being mugged on the way home in '99 and having a breakdown. I was in the same year and school as Adam Driver. I was suffering from Complex PTSD with dissociation, selective mutism, anxiety, depression, dissociative identity disorder, derealization, depersonalization, etc. Pretty much all the complex you can put into Complex PTSD. Basically think Fei/Id from Xenogears, maybe Sora/Shiro from No Game, No Life before he gets invited to Disboard, and the main character from Mr. Robot but without the hallucinations. I think I told some people some things. I told absent back in 2004 because he was insisting I go to a college near him in New York.

I had been told I was beyond help by a psychologist at 10. All I could do was recover naturally at some point in my life. I had an old doctor at 12 refuse to diagnose me with a new theory from the 80s. The guy who had been there when I was admitted broke down in tears from being unable to help me. He'd argued for a therapeutic massage for me which returned the humanity I had lost at the time. I had bad experiences with therapy. I figured if I learned to code I'd be able to figure it out myself. The brain processes experiences like data, I thought. I read neuroscience articles and tried to make comparisons. All of that was sort of a dead end.

Once I started identifying myself as a programmer I became unable to talk about programming. Unable to continue coding, I switched to Japanese translating for the FF7 Retranslation Project on qhimm in late 2013 which I had learned thanks to an amazing teacher at my high school. I was rusty and stuck to names of things. After that, I was lost without a purpose.

In 2014, the wall inside me came down thanks to a girl on Steam who decided to break into my isolation. I reconnected with my old real life friends. They still treated me normal but thanks to that they triggered clues about myself. I recognized that the fear and terror inside me was different than feeling normal. It took 2 1/2 years recovering the unprocessed traumas and accepting each one while withstanding suicidal urges. I have strong convictions that kept me alive even with total isolation. I got my voice back and became whole. My life felt out of order. My cat died and I distracted myself in late 2016 doing some ps2sdk work then went back to working on myself. I started writing out my life story to figure out who I was and am. I finished that book just recently. I overcame 28 years of Complex PTSD.

I learned that having answers is better than having none. So, if any of you guys ever thought I was a bit weird, there you go. Thanks for being there, for the fun times, and sorry if I ruffled feathers.

I don't have any chat logs but these are the names I remember off the top of my head.

I was with #consolevision for over a decade but had a hard time opening up about my past without understanding it. All that just poured out when I started posting. Probably things I tried to say for a long time that just got backed up. My new philosophy is let it out and regret nothing for now. Clear out the old ones, too.

Hey Rag! I didn't know about your issues in your personal life, but I'm very happy to hear that things have gotten better for you.

I mainly posted under the username pSyCo back then (Because I was 14 when I setup my DCE account), and I very much remember just about all of the old crew, as this scene was a huge part of my life during those years. Going through CD-R after CD-R trying new emulators and new version releases, getting a coders cable and testing builds of Doom for crt0 and a media player for LiENUS, photoshop battles with T-MONEY, and having a consistent group of friends to chat with on the forums, IRC, and AIM as I moved around a bunch in high school.

Created an account here just to say hello to everyone and thank you for always being awesome, even when some of you were dicks :)

BlueCrab and I saw that you joined #dreamcastdev a few weeks ago and although we were still afk by the time you /quit, we were both relieved to have seen an appearance from you.

I spent so much time growing up with you guys on IRC, so when I see a nick drop off of the face of the earth, I start to worry. Especially for someone who was on IRC daily for 10 years or so like yourself. In the last 2 years I've known 2 people on EFnet who have died (a heroin OD and a suicide), so it's often difficult to not expect the worst when someone disappears. I'm very glad you're still out there and you're well.

About 3/4 of the people on your list of memorables I have contact info for or have in more recent years crossed paths with on the internet in other communities, often in humorous situations. The other 1/4 I have not heard from in years and have no idea where they are.

Yeah, I remembered the last time I went that I was in a dark place. I wanted to show up and make sure you guys knew I had become fine. I should have done it sooner. I knew you guys were afk but figured you'd see when you guys got back.

Also, the reason I was there, math libraries are hard to implement on a system that can't round anywhere but down. I might go back to it one day. I actually got ps2sdk's libc to be a dependency for gcc and libstdc++ with a nearly complete c99 standard after I added that fdlibm math library. It's so much better than having to add newlib as a dependency for libm. No intermingled calls from using multiple C libraries. There was a weird pesky bug of using malloc() from ps2sdk and free() from newlib. Every ps2 project I did was unstable especially with atomic C++ functions using instructions not available on the r5900. C++ style strings would instant crash. I was using doxygen to graph dependencies and it was like a thing of artwork to see arrows pointing where they should go. No arrows coming from outside from unknown sources.

I worry about Uzza. He catfished me one day as a prank. He disappeared not long after that when I sort of retracted into myself. I felt like we were pretty close playing online together so doing that might have set him adrift. His humor was the darkest ever. I feel like him doing that actually helped me a bit by getting rid of another escapism. I remember being told he moved to Florida from Alaska or something. I hope he's still out there and doesn't feel guilty about doing that.

Uzza is apparently still around. He joined IRC today (##dreamcast and #dreamcastdev on Freenode) but left before I could come around to keyboard.
