Does anyone know what happened to this place? I remember they always advertised all the latest and greatest import games and systems in the magazines back in the day. They would even have ads for systems that weren't out, I think they even advertised systems that never came out. Does anyone know if they are still around? A quick web search didn't turn up much.
At its peak, there were about a dozen Diehard Game Club stores. There was one not far from me and around 1994-1995 I'd spend some time there on weekends. They had a room with about 20 different systems set up (everything from Neo Geo to the Atari Jaguar) where you could play pretty much anything if you had a membership card. It was the first place I had seen an import Saturn and even then I remember how disappointed I was by the glitchy Virtua Fighter that debuted with it. To answer your question, no, most DHGC stores went out of business around 1996-1997. They just closed shop and then DHGC and later became GameCave and I believe later on Express.com (all had ties to the GameFan magazine empire, such as it was).
Pretty impressive to see this being talked about (long ago though it was). My dad was one of the lead contractors on all of the locations and was working on the final location in Chicago before they went bankrupt. Really makes me sad that things happened as they did with how revolutionary their idea was. I still remember seeing pictures of the completed stores but never got a chance to actually go see one (I was in the store in Spokane, WA as it was under construction, but that was about it).
Hell yeah it is, & their pricing is still strange (randomly cheap hardware, extremely expensive games.)
I managed a Die Hard store back in the day, known to the locals as the best game store to ever grace STL.
I wish there were magazines or game stores that does this today! Like have a few kids try out various Japanese imports for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 & PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PSP & PSVita. See what locals think of the games that they played and see what they think of it as do you think it should come over to the States or should just stay? Sorta questions
