people say it's really good and nice... also it supposedly runs on this: https://www.genesi-usa.com/store/details/11 and this: https://www.genesi-usa.com/store/details/12 anyone has ever seen in action these efikas? also those efikas are supposed to be able to run amigaOS too if i got it right?
also Efikas are not able to run the official AmigaOS now I think about it. Licensing issue. Amiga OS only installs on Classics PPC, AmigaONE, PegasosII and the SAM series - like this one: http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1014 and yes that's the real price for just the board/CPU + OS.
Tell me about it.. Thats why its better to get an old Mac. A G4 unit is faster (just about) and cost a fraction of a SAM/AmigaONE. I got my mini for £60 on ebay last year and its good for Morphos which is a lot better than amiga OS4+ imho.
I have run MorphOS, very slick and nice OS. If you lounge back for the days of high-end Amiga systems like Big box Amiga packed with 040/060 and RTG (graphics card, 16 mil color) you will feel right at home! MorphOS is a fresh Workbench like operating system that is compatible with system friendly Amiga applications. If you look for an alternative to A500 with floppy to play old classics, you should look elsewere though. I have also run AmigaOS4.1 for a year, nice system too but not as cheap as MOS since you will need custom hardware that is pricey. For MOS you can get cheap old PPC mac and a MOS license for 150 euro (or use the test version for ~60 min at a time). Eventually sold the 4.1 system and now only have my A1200 with 060.
I love the classic A1200 setups. Have a look at mine http://www.8bitplus.co.uk/projects/amiga-1200-desktop/ I also have a towered A1200 with 060+PPC 210mhz and AOS4 classic.
I have an old Apple G3 or G4 laptop with a damaged screen. If there were a way to make it output to VGA, I reckon I'd have a hell of a fun time with this morphos thing.
If it's an iBook G3 or G4, it's likely you need this cable: http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8639G/A - most G3 and G4 Apple laptops clone the display by default.
I need to bust out the old G4 again and play with MOS. I used it for a few days but the 60 minute time limit was crippling to my fun. Definitely wouldn't mind another little short project to do here at home.
Tried it once a g4... I tried it once in a G4, and it is a very cool O/S but not something that I would use a daily operations (desktop or server) basis. Still, it's very cool. On the Genesi subject, now if I can just find a Pegasos II board... Regards, npt
No, it says shalom. That's an awesome idea, though. I can't seem to get 2.7's disc to load. It keeps booting to the old 2.6 - I had it boot to install once but it told me to go into open firmware and boot manually or something, and my G4 is refusing to acknowledge that I have a keyboard attached. Shit. Well, reinstall Debian it is - for now.
Ah, MorphOS. I've known it since a while but honestly I have never used it on my B&W G3 because I don't see its usefulness when there is already PPC Linux which works very well and is much more powerful. There are ports of the three main *BSDs but they are a bit harder to install (you have to make the HFS boot partitions yourself or boot from the network card). When I was younger I used to fiddle a lot with these obscure operating systems so I know about a lot of them. Now I don't do it anymore because I don't see its usefulness when there is already something which works well enough. What I care about is applications and a stable machine. The free *nixes can give me that. On the other hand some precompiled packages in the only good Linux distribution for PPC Macs (Debian) can be broken due to bad compilation options. Luckily it is nothing essential. For example SDL on Debian is compiled for G4s with Altivec extensions by default, which my B&w G3 doesn't have. Manually recompiling SDL fixes that though. I feel it's worth it over MorphOS.
After installing Debian 5 and then MorphOS 2.7 the other night, I ended up just putting 10.4.11 on my machine because it is a lot easier for me to deal with. If I had the time to delve into MOS I would, and Linux is a pain because of the problems with Flash and such. Not to say this machine is powerful enough to watch any YouTube videos anyway (as I found out this evening... Grrr...). I definitely won't use it as a main box, of course, just a fun hobby play thing. Maybe when I move out I'll station it in the basement of the new place where the band practices and we can use it as a recording device. Of course, Reaper (freeware yet powerful multi-track recording software) is available for OSX+PPC - - - wee! I have yet to test how useful it is on this slow 450Mhz machine... I know I had some trouble last year when I was in possession of a 2x1Ghz MDD G4 when I slopped on a lot of effects in Reaper over a couple tracks. I suppose I'll only need one, technically. I really wish I had a machine that would run Amiga 4.1 - y'know, just to dabble in it as well. I'm curious what those of you who use MorphOS on a regular or semi-regular basis actually do with their machines? Just normal day-to-day stuff, or anything particularly special?
those efikas are 800mhz and supposedly can play YT videos... not that i'm that much into YT digging...
