Not sure if this allowed to be posted, but I just noticed that this recently released genesis emu is stated to be full speed. I havent had a chance to burn it, but from what I hear this is the dc emu everyone has been waitng for. http://dreamcast.dcemu.co.uk/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,32,338 Ill try and see if I can burn it and post impressions.
It's shite ! They say it's full speed with full sound and a very good compatibility rate. I think not ! True, the speed for the most part is good but on many games the graphics are messed up. You can change the video emulation but then the speed drops. Sound is awful ! Not one game I tried (out of 40 odd) had audio anywhere near the real Mega Drive sound. many games had horrible out of tune beeps or just a complete mess. Sadly we are still waiting. Sega's own emulator is still the best. The only problem with that is the audio. Yakumo PS: That new Mega Drive EMU is a pain in the arse to burn as well ! I wasted 4 CDRs on it.
So I take it the sound is actually worse then the official sega emu? My cousins been playing almost non-stop with that emu and I don't know how he does it. I tried playing dynamite heady and sonic 2, but after a few minutes the warped sound started to drive me nuts.
looks like im skipping out on this one i guess. Thanks for letting me know I was almost about to waste a cdr, which version have you both tried out?
I still can't understand why nobody (even Sega) has yet been able to produce something approaching 100% accurate MegaDrive emulation on the infinitely more powerful Dreamcast, especially when my computer - with its crusty old Cyrix MII 300 processor and 4Mb of on-board RAM - can run MD titles at full speed with perfect, CD quality stereo sound! Come to think of it, didn't the Saturn contain the same chip that was used in the MegaDrive somewhere within its own complex architecture? I'm surprised perfect emulation on this console hasn't been achieved, either... and Sonic Jam, Phantasy Star Collection or Sega Ages don't count as they were remade for the console!
It has to do with the fact that when sega did the emu they were lazy about it. At the time I think they were going to try to port the titles but finding the source code for such games such as ecco (which was somewhere in the middle east belive it or not) became too diffcult. So they decided to use an already made homebrew emu that was one of the weakers ones and port it to dc. If one of segas japanese teams was doing the emulation it would have probably been perfect, but since sega of america was trying to do it on the cheap they opted with the one that is used in the smash pack. Now as for the one that was included with the dream passport in japan I think yakumo confirmed its the same emu. I asked stef who did the gens emu if he ever considered porting it to dc since there was a port fo xbox, however he told me he wouldnt have the time since he would have to rewrite all the code since the emu was programed in assembly. I gues it all comes down to the way the emus are coded. Im suprised no one has cracked the emu that is used on the ages collection for ps2. Compared to the one used on sonic mega collection +, its perfect like the one on game cube.
Yep, the Japanese MD EMU is the same crappy one from Sega America. Not all games work plus the audio is horrid. Now the PC Engine Emulator on Dream Passport 3 is something that nobody ever ripped. I wonder why? Yakumo
I never was 100% postive whether my DC could run ROMs or not. What process was it I needed to do to get the ROMs burned on the PC and read and recognized by the DC?
Free demo: http://www.drill.rr.nu/download.htm Download. Burn. (don't use Nero) Boot. If it boots, your DC can run CD-R. -hl718
I think it will have to take a very good Assembly programmer to code an emulator that not only does the graphics well but also the sound and keep it where there is enough space in the RAM for the ROM image. THe DC has what? 24mb of RAM? Of course I used to run a genesis DOS emulator on my old 120mhz pentium laptop w/ 16mb RAM and it ran all the games well.
Yup 16mb main ram 4mb video. Though emu authors for some reason alwasy end up going over on space when it come to bigger games. Plus you have to consider the fact that not only are dc games programmed in c++, its cpu is clocked at 200mhz. When people over clock they do notice a speed increase in emus like dreamsnes. So im guess they would have to write specificly to the sh4 and the powervr2 graphics chips. I think I read somewhere thats what the bleem guys did this to achieve the performance that was on bleem cast.
THere are some emulators that runn games full speed with full audio and no frame skip for Dreamcast but none of these are for the SNES (all SNES emulators on the DC are crap) or Mega Drive. Here's a list of what I use. NEOCD4ALL - Neo CD EMU that runs over 80% of the games perfectly SMEG - Master System / Game Gear EMU that's 100% perfect. Just a shame it doesn't have FM sound support. DCNESTER - Famicom / NES EMU. Again runs pratically everything perfectly. other perfect Emulators that I don't use are for the Amiga, Atari ST (Both make use of the DC mouse & Keyboard), Sega SG1000 and a few others such as a spectrum EMU. Yakumo
Just tried this. My DC CAN'T read the Cd.:-( Oh well, I guess I can run ROMs on the PC like a good boy. Havent even played a ROM in ages, though.
