Planning to build a small router/firewall/server-ish thing. I want it to be small, silent, cheap, low power consumption and be stable.. (the normal wish list ^_^)

    So my plan was:
MB: Fanless Jetway JF74 Dual Gigabit LAN (need two LAN ports for the fw/router setup, would be great with three for a DMZ setup but this will do ok too)
    Case: Thin Client Mini-ITX
Storage: Some CF card or USB memeory stick.
OS: Probably just do a minimal custom slackware install. To hold the size and resource usage down.

Now I'w just a bit worried over stability and over heating with MB being fanless and case small.. does this setup look ok? Any ideas on better setup?

    Thanks.

But it doesn't fill some of my requirements: small, low power consumption and silent ;)
    Else they would be excellent.

edit: And there's only one LAN port.

use a bigger case for avoid over heating.

i don't like solid state memories for a home server, because this kind of memories has a short life. you can use a CF or usb stick for a limited read/write times. use a 2,5" hard drive instead.

how many MB of ram are you going to install? the maximum capacity would be nice, especially when you use P2P programs (and you will use them )

yeah, I've been thinking of the shartor life of those type of memories, but I don't think that will be a problem as long as I don't use the disc as swap memory. For memory size I'm thinking 512MB - 1GB. Should be enough, my temporary server I use right now has 512MB and peak memusage seems te be around 100MB.

    edit:
karsten > yeah had a look at them but felt I could put together something similar cheaper.

you can use a specially distro that load all system into the ram, in this way you have a very reactive system and a very low access to CF/usb stick. is archivable with 512MB of ram

Man I always wanted to built a nano-ITX but everytime I get to do it something happens and I've to leave the project aside :(

Last year I almost put one in my car with Coyote and a 8" touchscreen:033:

Anyway, you're using it only as router firewall? is the server part going to work as a NAS or you're planning something more complex like torrent downloads?

Do you want it to be both silent and (electricity) economical? or just silent is enough?

About the OS use ClarkConnect, is the best one out there for what you're trying to do:nod:

And use solid memory only: as long as the CF is from a good brand and the IDEtoCF cable works you wont be getting any problems at all. IMO avoid 2.5 disks, they are slower and will make the case hotter, which means a fan and that translates to a noisy box thats annoying 24/7.
