Anything in the Dreamcast Homebrew Scene that's worthwhile? I'm not a fan of shooters and those seem to be the majority of the full releases.
I've read before that it's near-impossible to port old PC games to Dreamcast without having access to the original source code, but I'd love if someone was to at least try. The entire range of Sega PC titles from around the Saturn era would be perfect, especially as the likes of Sonic R, Daytona USA, The House Of The Dead and Virtual On would therefore be far superior to their official console versions of the time. Still, it's highly unlikely... I can dream though, right? Actually, I've just had a strange thought - it might not be possible, though I'm still going to ask just in case someone here knows how to achieve my idea. Considering the original arcade version ran on hardware built around the PowerPC architecture, would it be realistic for someone to reverse engineer Konami's GTI Club (maybe even using the recent PS3 update as reference) and produce a Dreamcast port based on this? Now there's one game from that era I'd truly kill to have played back at home!
The closest you'll get is a DOS/386 emulator. It's just not possible to run x86 Windows binaries natively on a Dreamcast. I don't know what hardware you're referring to, but if it's got a PowerPC CPU, then it'll be the same problem again, since the DC has an SH4. Getting mixed up with PowerVR graphics chipset maybe?
Beats of Rage, Feet of Fury, GenesisPlusDC, NesterDC SE, DreamSNES, MAME4ALL, and Bleemcast! are great.
I suppose it was the idea of any PC-based game being easy to rework for Dreamcast, but just because the platform supports Windows CE doesn't automatically open the floodgates for a wealth of ports from actual PC hardware. If that was the case, someone would already have found a way to run the whole Sega PC range of Saturn conversions by now, yes? P.S. Was the source code for Quake available when Titanium Studios did their Dreamcast port, or did this happen later?
You sound a little unsure of what WinCE on the Dreamcast actually comprises. I addressed this just the other day, do a search for my username and WinCE and you should find the thread. The source leaked some time in 1997 I think, and the engine was GPL'd in 1999. The maps were too, a year or so ago. Carmack's pretty big on that stuff - I wouldn't be surprised to see a source release for Doom 3 pop up soon.
I remember reading in an interview he gave a while ago that it would be a bit before the source comes out. There is some code that he isn't allowed to distribute in there, but it will be out sometime. There were a few other good looking DC homebrew games but they never made it out...I think one was called Alice and it looked great but I am not sure what happened with it.

Both are extremely good and addictive games and no shmups. Other than that, there's Feet of Fury (dancing/typing), Cool Herders (multiplayer party game), and Inhabitants (puzzle). All of them are pretty good, none of them is a shmup and all are available at www.goatstore.com
I think we can basically say no then, anything that is sold ceases to be homebrew and quite frankly most of the sold stuff is average at best and emulators and Ports of PC games are nice but less homebrew and again available on other machines.
I'm looking forward to Rush Rush Rally Racing, from the makers of Beats of Rage! (Senile Team) http://www.senileteam.com/rushrushrallyracing.html Also from the same makers: Age of the beast http://www.senileteam.com/ageofthebeast.html
I've been waiting for Age of the Beast for what seems like years. I look forward to it's eventual release.
Why are you always so concearned by something also being available on another machine, To say the last 7 years of continual output is worth nothing is just phenominally ignorant. No other console has had a HB scene anywhere near as active as the DC.
Great to see you, Kron. Jamtex: As much as I would like to ignore your post, I have to add that half of the list actually is Dreamcast exclusive homebrew. Ignore the obvious ports and give the things you never heard of a try.
