I had NO IDEA this could exist. I mean I dreamt it up, but this is too cool. http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rch/ele/3242437638.html However it's an early model CD drive. Any chance there's something like it in a DVD flavour? If there is I would have so many uses for it. So very many uses. I've tried Google but it brings up trucks (4x4) any other things slightly related with the keywords. Thanks.
I had a couple Panasonic CD-ROM changers. It worked OK with Win9x. The oddity of using these devices is the OS thinks it's 4 (or 5) separate drives...so each time the OS checks the discs it will stall whatever task it is working on as it changes the discs. Simple things like opening My computer can now take a minute or two to display. I've also had a 250 disc multi-drive DVD-rom changer. It required special software to control it, and was a bit of a beast. Every time the software's emulated directory structure got corrupted you ended up re-scanning all 250 discs. They stopped making these devices when hard drive capacity was big enough to store all 250 discs for example.
Thanks for the help. I was under the impression they were a rare piece (as per the ad) but I suppose not. I'll be looking to buy one, I guess.
The problem is that those things are probably very slow, compared to newer drives. They've made a lot of advancements in optical drives over the years, despite the fact that they're starting to go out of style. What would you need this for? The only application I could see for it is if you were installing one of those games that takes up many discs. Even in that case, it would just be a minor convenience... it would save you maybe 3-4 seconds. It would probably end up taking longer, actually, due to the drives being so slow. Seems rather pointless, other than as an interesting oddity.
You could play Wing Commander III by putting all 4 discs in one of these! Actually, Under a Killing Moon has an option in the settings to assign the different CD-ROMs to drive letters so you can use a CD-ROM changer.
My oh my. "ASSEMbler is a stupid retard"... Well. On topic- I'm using it for my own good. I don't need speed or efficiency, just the extra little "cool" factor Admit it- these drives are pretty awesome. The whole concept behind them is something I like. Just like how I really like zip drives/disks. They're terrible by todays standards, but I just like the way they work. If I would make an emulator machine for older systems I'd put in either one of these drives or a zip drive. HDD as well, but for removable media, zip/multidisc would be cool (useless).
Somehow he misspelt "ASSEMbler," despite the fact that it's written in huge letters at the top of the page.
