I now have to figure out how to use it!! I'm from the C64/Spectrum Era but this is a little bit beyond me. Thankfully it came with all of the disks and manuals but I have to put it all back together first as I completely stripped it to clean it.

Just waiting for the GF to go home and I'll get reading and playing.

It's likely I'll sell it due to my limited space but I'm going to make damn sure I have fun with it first.

Interesting. While playing with the machine today, the monitor started belching out smoke (I'm not having a good week) and yet still continued to function (until I pulled the plug).

Any idea what that might have been? What could blow but not kill the monitor outright? I daren't open it, what with it being a CRT. Just curious.

If it continued to function it probably didn't have anything to do with the logic board. I would check for more blown caps, especially the one you just put it. It's quite possible there is another failed component that caused the original cap (and your new cap) to blow.

To be safe, grab a multimeter and test the voltage across the CRT's caps and transformer. You should be ok because you unplugged the machine while it was on, which tends to discharge most of the capacitors. A good rule of thumb when working on high voltage circuits is to keep one hand out of the circuitry. That way if you do get shocked you have a much less change of the current passing across your heart.

This is the monitor I'm talking about. The machine itself is just fine. I may just carefully pop the back off and see what's gone on underneath. If it's something easy I may attempt it.
