The API allows 3rd party manufacturers to apply for Apple Certification on their game controllers and gives developers the capacity to implement compatibility into their games. As an iOS user and Dev I welcome the change however... ...is this going to be the change that brings Apple into the home console market? If we consider the fact that Apple has been adding more device and App support to Apple TV, a licensed controller connected to ATV with Airplay effectively becomes a Wii U with a very strong App ecosystem. Discuss (if you like)
I use the iCade from Ion as a Mame cab for my ipad. Its very cool and as long as games have icade support you can play the games with an actual arcade stick and buttons. I think more joystick implementation is a great idea and will bring much better games to IOS.
True but you try marketing the android options to the masses? Apple could do well with this. Have an iPhone? Have a TV? buy an Apple TV bundled with this controller and you have Apple's new game console the iCash.
Do you have a link to the press release or something? I'm not familiar with AirPlay or how Apple TV would fit into this, but I can imagine the possibilites... A controller with a built-in cradle for the iPhone, connected to the iPhone via Bluetooth will be a comfortable way to game on the iPhone. You can get fancy with it and turn it into a clamshell style case (folding over like a DS) without making it TOO cumbersome... When you get home, you can even use the DV cable to connect the iphone to your TV via HDMI. The controller is really important in gaming. Having only a touch screen doesn't cut it...
dont think apple will have another go at the home console market, maybe just allowing a controller to be used with their products as is already the case with android systems. im not a fan of apple at all nor of iphones, ipads or other tablet devices. so it's a big meh from me but i can see how this would benefit developers for apple platforms.
I know you're expecting me to throw this back at you due to your opinion of the Ouya..... But no no I wont
No idea what Android already having a controller API 2 years ago has to do with that worthless crapbox. Incidentally, three months after they started shipping, all the Kickstarter Ouyas still haven't been shipped. LOL
It's been in the market as a gaming device since the beginning considering that it was more profitable than the PS3 at one point.
they are shipping, all be it slowly plenty of people have got their ouyas, there were issues with the controller and faceplates apparently, i still think they're a pretty cool little box, not from a core gaming point of view but from a modding and hacking point of view. i see possibilities. edit: apple tv a gaming device? waaaaaaaaaa?
I don't even think they'll try to enter the home console market, I think they're just setting it up to happen naturally. All they have to do is get someone like Firemint to announce Real Racing for Apple TV and get them to show off dual screen controller capability with an iPhone connected to Apple TV and they're golden. I'm not saying they'll do this at all, nobody has confirmed App development for ATV yet but I can see it happening. I for one will be happy. Making games for touch screen devices is just annoying.
They don't need to. The hardware is already out there. iOS gaming can be done directly on the device with a holster type of controller with this new API, and you can play on the TV as well by using the AirPlay/wireless display option on the AppleTV. The graphics are very good and the resolution is near-HD or greater-than-HD on the native screen of the device already so they'll have no problem with video quality. Suddenly you have a controller with a touchscreen and display. Sound like something consoles have been trending to lately?
requirement of apple tv, requirement of ipad or iphone + controller vs buy pc or buy console. easy choice pc or console every time.
Not that cool since they either lied about making it open or realized how horrendous Android piracy is, so at the moment it's not really open at all. I'm sure modders will find a way, but Ouya's closedness is lame as hell.
