I had my Macbook sent back to Apple a month ago after a piece of plastic on the palm rest broke off with use. I'd never purchased any extended care plan and so I was lucky for this to happen to me in my one year free period of warranty. It looks as if the same area is about to break again (I can see a crack and this is a common problem on white Macbooks) and now i'm worried because my warranty has expired...or has it? I used the Apple website to check my warranty status using my serial number and the date has changed from 2009 to 2011, and it also states that I have an Applecare custom agreement. Does anyone know what this means? Can someone in the UK check to see if their warranty is any different. Apple don't accept emails for warranty purposes and I can't call because I'm out of the country, i'd love to know if I've had a free extension so I can get ready to get it fixed when I get home. There's a thread on mac rumors that states that warranty extensions have been issued to some customers and this is something to do with the UK trading laws and educational purchases, but my Macbook was a straight store buy.
Why not just wait till you get home and try sending it in. I mean if it tells you that the warranty is still running just get it fixed. I wouldn't want to deal with the politics of it. but that's me.
1. Call the Apple warranty line in the country you're in 2. Call the Apple warranty people in the UK (OK, say it costs you a tenner - how much is two years' warranty worth? Nuff said!) 3. Get a friend/family member back home to call the UK warranty people In any case, I'm sure whatever you do if you call them (or someone here on your behalf) and explain you're working out of the country of purchase, they'll be able to help.
The cracks are an extended service program, so if your Macbook is from that series and has been repaired for that problem in the past, you might have gotten the custom agreement title to make possible future repairs easier without the hassle of finding out if you qualify or not. Atleast, that's what I think. Not sure about UK though.
Indeed, as the cracks are due to a design fault, for the life of the computer (ie 3 years) apple will fix and replace that specific fault. So if the rest of the computer breaks then you'll be charged with the repair.
That's pretty good, though. How many PC-based laptops have stress cracks appear on the hinges? Yes, that's a design fault, but other than your standard warranty, they won't help. I went into the Toshiba outlet with my friend to tell them his wife's Toshiba laptop was getting cracks and I think it was still within the warranty. They hadn't heard of such a thing. So he went up to the same model on display to show them where abouts he meant, folded the screen down and guess what... their display model had cracks!!!
Thanks for all of your help. I'll call them as soon as I get home to confirm this with them. Ignorant fanboy?
I just checked my gf's and hers is still at 1 year from purchase (june '08). I think what Jamtex said will be true, if you have a specific fault that is repaired under warrenty then that specific part will have its warrenty period extended. If you would like i can call them up for you or pop into my local mac-store and try to find out. PM me your serial number if you want me to. We can call it a downpayment on that game your gonna attemp to aquire from korea for me.
