A japanese person told me that arcades in Japan cost more than the ones in USA, around a dollar for each person. I wanted to confirm.

What is this alien saying? --> :ramen

I know you didn't ask this, but I thought I'd throw this in anyway, as I find it interesting. All arcades in the UK I have seen are between 50p and £1 per game, unless the game is very (like >15yrs) old

I believe that is correct. 100 yen per play on most games....even more on some of the newer, more elaborate games.

No different than the US really. My local arcade has most of its new releases (Initial D ver 3, Maximum Tune 2, Ghost Squad) going at $1.00 per play. Not a big deal to me as I happen to love arcade gaming. Prices come down over time.

from what I understand, in the past from when arcades were live here in Maryland

    new games: 50 cents
    old games: 25 cents
    Bigger machine games : .75/1.00

Japanese arcade prices are as follows in most game centers.

Brand New fancy cabinet games = 100 or 200 yen depending on the arcade. These games are mostly driving games.

Brand New games in normal Astro City sit down cabinets = 100 yen

Games about 3 years old are 50 to 100 yen. Again depends upon the arcade.

Really old stuff from the early to mid 90's or before = 10 to 50 yen. Depending on the arcade.

I remember 7 years ago in the UK it was about 1 pound most of the time.

this may seem expensive but remember that the pay in Japan if you're over 30 is probably better than the UK and defiantly better than the US so it doesn't seem so bad to us. I can even buy a 6 year old house for around 10 million yen which is only 50 thousand pounds ! And that's in a good area with decent sized rooms (3 bed, living & dinning). So as you can see Japan is a rip off in some areas but quite cheep in others.

Back in Puerto Rico, when I was a kid in the early 90s, the arcades were either a quarter or at the most 50cents!!

When I moved up here arcades were 50cents and newer ones were $1 to $1.5, thats why I stopped going, that and because the new games were the same as the older cheaper games. Raiden DX was still a nice 50cents. Spent a total of $15 on that machine on one day.

The Euro changeover was just an excuse for the arcades to jack up all their prices over here. Before, new games were generally 50p (the punt was worth slightly less than sterling - IR£1 = £0.86 now), with the exception of the really really fancy stuff, or rip-off city arcades which were £1. Plain cabinet games were usually 20p (typically Neo-Geo/CPS stuff), and old stuff was 10p. Now, most games are either €1 or €2 (especially the latter with new racing games/big cab's), and older games are often nowhere to be seen. They'll even charge €1 for good ol' Daytona or Sega Rally!

But I found an arcade in some small seaside town charging only 20c for their plain cabinet games, including Neo Turf Masters and Metal Slug - I was so happy! ^_^

Arcades in Tokyo are 100 yen ALMOST across the board. I've not seen a 200 yen arcade game in Japan since Virtua Fighter 3 launched, and I wasn't in Tokyo then. I don't play a whole hell of a lot of the big new racing games though. From what I've seen, even the new big games -- 100 yen. If you can find an ALL PLAY 50 yen game center (like the one in Tokyo) everything is, as advertised, 50 yen. Even the new, very big stuff.

If you're playing a versus game, and are pretty addicted to it, you can drop a lot of money quickly. I used to spend 2-3000 yen on Virtua Fighter 4 pretty easily.

I'm anxious to see what the new massive fucking Gundam game turns out to be.
