Are otaples rare?

In both dimensions. (Real Life and Anime)

Example in Anime: Ohno and Tanaka

 

One is going to assume that rather then think you are smoking crack and making posts that are sometimes nonsensical, one will assume by Otaples you mean couples where both members are otaku?

As otaku has a different meaning in Japan then it does in the west then the answer to your question could be yes and it could be no and it could be something else.

As long as I've heard, otaku in Japan = obssesed nerd, so I doubt that any couple will auto declare "otapul" or however it was.

This was a joke in Genshiken and the poster didn't get it.

You'd have to have seen the anime to get it. But Basically this hardcore crazy (and ungodly good at fighting and puzzle games) otaku was dating this really hot chick he went to High School with was trying to get into it too just to spend time with him but she wasn't feeling it.

So they were talking and 2 people walk by and say Otaple and she was quite insulted by it.

It's not even a real term and the couple in question didn't even consist of 2 by definition Otaku.

Oh and DO watch Genshikin it will make you feel better about yourself. And the Switching sex positions story just to watch an anime is hilarous to hear.
