I noticed something in my PS2 when I open it NOTHING happens. no console resetting or what not.

I saw a sale on a few SNK ps2 games and went ahead and ordered them then found swap magic 3 on Amazon.

Alrighty great NOW DO I REALLY need the magic keys if my PS2 doesn't reset when I open the lid?

Has anybody tried to use it with out them?

you'll still need a swap disc. But I don't know whats with your ps2 not resetting. the reset button is wired to the motherboard to tell it to reset when it's pressed.

Yeah I ordered Swap magic only thing I didn't get was the Magic keys

My PS2 Slim model number is SCPH-77001

I can swap out discs no problem and everything will still run (the Katamari trick) that's why I ask if I really need these magic keys or not.

I've noticed the same thing open the door doesn't reset the system or bring you back to the menu though I think it stops the music. Since when does pressing the reset button open the cd drive? they are separate buttons. I know if you press the open button when its off it starts but I've never had it restart. I have the original ps2 ( got at launch) .
So I have to wonder the same thing if its really needed. I only have one import ps1 game ( rockman adventure) Which I have never gotten to work ( really didn't try) But I'v swapped other things and they work

Yes you DO need the magic keys or a fliptop lid.

When you open the disc tray in the PS2 you essentially disabled the ability to read the disc. When you close the lid/tray, the drive begins authenticating the disc. If it's a domestic original disc it enables the system to read the disc. If it's an import or a CD-R/DVD-R the system will be unable to read the disc. By having the magic keys/fliptop, when your system boots you have a disc in that authentics when it boots up. Also your keys or fliptop jams the lid sensor to always be closed. This means you can change to another disc and the system can still read it. The SwapMagic and similar discs are mainly a program that lets you load another game.

You should note though without the drive reset/reauthentication you can not change between CD and DVD. Not likely a big deal, but that's why you get 2 swap magic discs, one on CD and one on DVD.

Again, you do need the magic keys or a fliptop lid to stop the lid sensor from becoming "open".

you put the swap magic in, the disc loads up, remove swap magic, you put in your import/back up, slect "play", and it runs.

tell us how it works out.

SwapMagic loads like any game would as it's on a pressed disc that has the copy protection of any PS2 game on it. So the PS2 thinks it's a real game and boots it. Instead of a game program it's a simple loader program. First thing it does is tells the drive to turn off. This enables you to swap the disc safely. No laser or motor spinning the disc. Then it lets you select some options and ultimately, it has a load game function. This just reactivates the drive (tells it to spin up and turn on the laser) and starts reading the copied or import disc you sneaked into the drive via fliptop or magic keys.

So essentially it's very similar to GameShark. Infact with GameShark Lite on PSX, you could put in a large game like Final Fantasy 7, goto the music player part of gameshark lite and it would stop the disc from spinning. Then you need to open the lid without letting the sensor up telling the system you've opened it. Put in a copy or import, then goto start game. Game loads.

So really it's just a game loader program on a pressed disc so it is bootable. That combined with a method to swap in a copied or import disc enables what you want. Just the SwapMagic won't get you anywhere. Now just a FlipTop or Magickeys might get you somewhere if you find another way you could swap discs and get it to load from it.

You should just read up on SwapTricks. That's what SwapMagic is, the swap trick for PS2. There were swap tricks for PSX and Sega Saturn too.

I'm having trouble locating the magic keys now I don't really trust any of the sites I found.

Where I should I get the Magic keys from? Mod-chip.com? Ultimateconsoleguides.com?

That seems like the only sites I can trust....at least before they get shut down.

I can't recommend anywhere. I got my Swap Magic discs along time ago. And I couldn't recommend them if I remembered who cause they sent me my order plus someone else's. ;) You'll have to make up your mind yourself. How come you didn't get magic keys when you bought swap magic?
