Anyone here a fan of Dune by Frank Herbert? I'm reading it for the second time, and I'm almost done. It's really an amazing book, and one that warrants rereading. It's the kind of book that has a different effect on you depending on when in your life you read it. What I like about it is how it blends some truly mind-blowing ideas and science fiction landscapes with really solid storytelling and character development. Both the form and the content are captivating. I've seen the movie by David Lynch, which I thought was decent, but was not as good as it could've been. I'd like to see the Sci-Fi Channel TV series based on Dune. I've heard that it's more accurate to the book. Random fact: in episode 9 of Earthworm Jim (the TV series), Peter the Puppy can be heard reciting the Bene Gesserit "Litany Against Fear" as he's riding on Jim's motorcycle. For those unfamiliar, here it is: I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Both Sci-Fi mini series are worth checking out, it's a far better adaptation then Lynch. However it does look "cheap" in places but still more accurate. Great series but I think in a lot of ways it works better in "book" form vs film. There was a recent group looking to film a remake but got shut down recently after about 6 months of pre-prod.
I loved the original Dune game (the one that made it to the Sega-cd). Played it after having read the books, btw.
It just doesn't read well to me , I found myself not enjoying reading it and not knowing who the hell anyone was.
To each his own, I guess. It didn't bother me. In fact, I kinda liked it because it stretches your mind a little. It's kinda like learning a new language, except much easier than that. Also, in the original Dune there's a list of terminology and names if you get confused. Some of the terminology isn't explained, so it's very helpful. And another thought: I found it a bit hard to read the first time, because it was like a lot of information coming at me all at once. When I read it the second time it was a lot more enjoyable, because I already had most of the basic ideas down and I could focus more on the underlying story.
I definitely remember watching the mini series that was on Sci-Fi Channel about 10 years ago. I thought it was rather good, although I've never read the books.
I started watching the Sci-fi series, but I couldn't take it. They pretty much changed ALL of the dialogue. It was too annoying. Lynch's version at least kept a good portion of the original dialogue, if I remember correctly.
