Assembler Game

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by SuperFunkNinjaYoshiiKun, Mar 20, 2004.

  1. Ok guys, here's an idea. Let's make an Assembler Forums game! :smt024

Anyone here who can code, or do graphics, sound, website, and all other bits. Make it for PC and Dreamcast. Something simple, like a 2D scrolly shooter :smt023 or a platform game.

With all these excellent Dreamcast games like Giana Sisters, Beats of Rage and the various mods Castlevania/Megaman/TMNT it would be a cool thing to get together to do as the Assembler Forum and make something really cool. Anyone interested?

I can do sound. If I worked at it hard enough, I might be able to hone my gfx skills, but that'd be best left to an expert ;)

Not everyone has a DC Dev unit :p :smt019

    Dc Dev

Most homevrew guys don't even use the dev kit. The use Kalisto OS if I'm not mistaken. Check out Consolevision.

  5. A Dreamcast dev system for actual homebrew coding is just a PC with a Linux or CYGWIN environment hosting KOS and GCC/et al.

I don't think any of the existing DC homebrew was done on a dev system, it really wouldn't help much. In fact, only a couple things have been done with the Sega SDK or WinCE kit (partly because anything someone made with those official kits would be illegal to distribute...though that hasn't stopped people in the Xbox scene). 98% of what's out has been with KallistiOS or just raw lib-less programming.

Anyway, a new Dreamcast coding contest was just announced today, in fact. The GOAT Store is looking for games with classic arcade inspired gameplay and they're going to put the twenty best ones on a disc that will be professionally pressed, packaged and sold (just like Feet Of Fury, which also happens to have been published by the GOAT Store). The idea is to have a game that's all about getting a high score since there will be a uniform hi-score table for all the games and possibly even an Internet ranking system or something.

I'd love to work on this myself, I've been wanting to set up KOS and the compiler for ages and try my hand at some things, but now is a bad time for me. But I know there's a few basement coders in here, so I think this is a great idea. See what you guys can up with. And if you enter the contest I just mentioned, that kind of game is pretty easy to make since it doesn't involve a lot of world creation and whatnot, you just polish the engine to a high gleem and then set it against the player randomly and getting more and more difficult.

How about a driving game in the old style like Sega's Turbo where there's no finish line, but just endless driving ahead through various locales and road conditions and you get points for every car you pass. I've always liked games like that and it'd be interesting to see a modern interpretation of one.

  6. Here's an idea: The player could be a hardcore game collector after assembler's stack of 120 M2 units. Board members are either bosses trying to take the player's collection, or friendly characters with advice/items to give. When the player defeats a boss, they recieve a game console that grants various powers (Yes, the Sega Dreamcast DOES allow people to fly in real life, the option is hidden in the system menu) or something like that.

On a less ridiculous note, I can help with sprite graphics and backgrounds.

That's the coolest idea EVER! :smt023 Imagine us as bosses. :smt043

I'll add something. The player will travel all around the world to find the coolest stuff and coolest game systems.

Imagine his travel starting in USA, going down to Brazil, then Europe and the final stage: JAPAN :smt024

Just remember...It's can be hard to make a fun, original game...Perhaps doing a remake of an existing game is a good idea? :smt017

    I personally recommend Sega's own...Super Locomotive...

I thought it was really good...anyone else have any better ideas?

i could probably do the whole thing as a UT2004 mod, cept then it'd only be playable by people that have UT2004.

Sign me on for art too

Sign me on for character desgin, sprites, backgrounds, anything. I've got some examples of my artwork on my website. http://hawanja.com/portfolio.htm

I myself would love to be a really cheap villian, the one that the player says "Awww Mannn..." when he shows up. Like in NES Ninja Gaiden when those flying things knock you into pits right when you're trying to make a critical jump.

As for the game it's self, I say a zelda style rpg where you have to collect some rare stuff (like a zemmix or Car Marty) with some little minigames to make it interseting (like maybe a claw game where you get some cool item or something.) The plot? Aliens, demons, or evil corporations/secret societies are always cool. Plus there should be a part where you have to kill your best friend. Drama is always good in a RPG.

Good luck with that but I doubt it'll be as simple as you imagine ;)
A 2D scroll shooter for GBA would be interesting because there is nothing like that released yet,but that would surely be many months of hard work even if you all were exprerienced C/C++/Assembly coders + big problems because of limitations and memory leaks on some consoles.

It seems like over 90% here don't have real coding knowledge or a realistic impression of game creation (it took 2 years until Feet of Fury was finished) so I really doubt that a game will be made on this board.

I'm doing my own stuff right now and don't like team dev at all,but if you need help and here would actually be a team feel free to ask.

  12. I realize that the game development process takes a long time, however, it doesn't nessicarily take 2 years.

I hope to end up in the console gaming industry one day, and an independent project would look awesome on my resume, and I'm sure it would be loads of fun as well. Even in light of this, I am prepared to seriously devote the time and effort into a project, if others are inspired to do the same. :smt040

I can't code, but I do have a DC Dev unit and access to two prefessional recording studios. Let me know how I can help.

I can code... on PC (although I dont like Win32 coding), PSX and a bit on GBA... no Dreamcast though (although with a bit of practice I might try Saturn too with the leaked SGL libs)

However I need to have a driving force behind my coding or I wont actually do much (sad but true), so if someone figures out a more detailed description for a game and gives me some art I might give it a try :smt024

couldn't you just write it for the PC then port it to the Dreamcast like Beats Of Rage was done.?

Mmm I like the idea! And Greatsaintlouis his idea for the game is pretty cool :)
It would take some time to develop a game indeed, but who cares? I just for fun and for learning purposes right :smt023

  17. That is a cool idea. It would be pretty easyto do as a Beats Of Rage mod, too. Since you've gopt more people offering graphics and music help than actual programming, a mod of an existing game might be the way to go.

Beats Of Rage is definitely the most moddable game released on the Dreamcast so far, which is why there's such a huge number of mods in progress for it....too many, in fact, I'd say, which is part of why I dropped the one I was doing. Another editable Dreamcast/PC game is Super Tux, it's a Super Mario clone, you guys might be able to do something with that. Aport of a vertical shooter just came out, too, it needs some polishing to get to a playable state, but if/when it does, that'll be moddable, too.

  18. I think a traditional sidescroller like this would be the ideal format if there were going to be an ASSEMbler game - I mean, those 8 and 16-bit favorites we love and constantly come back to are mostly all the simple, fun, arcadish sidescrollers of old.

Just use Beats of Rage and make a modification of it, like TMNT/Megaman/Castlevania that are in the works?

Then it would be easy to port it to DC and PS2.

    game genre

Well, if it's up between mario style platforming vs. beats of rage side scrollring fighter, I say go with the platfroming game. You can be a lot more creative with a platformer, just look at SMW. Final Fight type games can be interesting too (like River City Ransom) but in terms of playability I always thought they got a little old after a while, you fight the same guys over and over using the same moves, etc. The only thing that saves them from getting too monotomous is if you have 2 players simutaneous, then it gets a little fun. But sounds like the thing we want to do would be a one player game as it has RPG elements(collecting game systems.) So a mario-type game with an overhead map and side scrolling areas would probably work better for our plot.

I can barely code at all. I have very limited experience, but I'm willing to learn more. Maybe I can help with debugging, for play testing, or anything.
